It's looking great Caleb, you for sure deserve the 5 stars rating. I've heard about the crumbled aluminium foil technique but I didn't know it gives such a good result. Jacques
Nicely done Caleb. I've used the crumbled filo technic for many years.:thumbs_up: I'll probably use it again on the"new" JJJ&E when I work on some tunnels on the far right side of the layout past the town of San Marino.
This shot gets at what I am hoping for for this scene, a train disappearing into a narrow dark tunnel, like its swallowed up by the mountain. Its also a great way to get trains from one side of the backdrop to the other.
I knew you'd come around, and join the dark side--a tunnel!!!!! Very nicely executed, BTW. A Rio Grande Tunnel Motor would look good easing out of that bore. :lightbulb:
Haha, I think I'll stick too a C&O geep for now. Thats it for today. Tomorrow I hope to ballast the insides of the tunnel and start landscaping around the tunnel entrance.
Bob, I think that method has been around longer than both you and I. lol Caleb, great job as usual. Although, I'd have to say, a WP train leaving that tunnel would be a awesome as a Grande train. hehe
Caleb, I like your tutorial to adding a tunnel liner. I have two tunnels to add linings to, and I didn't know how I wanted to do it. I have a new way to try now. I don't have plaster of paris, and Hydrocal seems to be too runny to use for this--do you think Sculptamold would work? It already has a rock texture, and the foil would add the rugged carved look I want. The only difference is my tunnels have removable roofs. Not sure how to execute linings with removable tops yet.
Thanks, Weta's work is so incredible. I've been a huge fan of there stuff ever since I saw the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Its a conspiracy! You guys are trying to get me to model the west! Couldn't you make the Hydrocal thicker by adding more of the powder? Plaster of paris can be runny depending on how much plaster you add to the water. I'm not sure if sculptamold would work, my experiences with casting sculptamold in rubber molds has never been that good, not sure about foil, I would do a test, but I don't have and scluptamold on hand.
Your modeling never ceases to amaze me, and inspire. Will definetely have to try the foil trick sometime myself.:thumbs_up:
Thanks Jeepy. Aye! If I ever did modern western it'd be BNSF all the way. Anyways, I've done some more ballasting... Once that drys, I'll weather the ballast and then I can start on the tunnel roof!
