Folks, Take a bow. Thanks for all of your help and encouragement. That this is now a realty means more than any but my closest friends and family can comprehend. It is as much your achievement as it is mine. These pics represent about 10 hours of actual labor. I could have hired a carpenter and almost did 3 times. I would like to thank 3 particular people, (and you know who you are), who never stopped encouraging me to do it. You are the best.
Steve: It's great to see your progress, Once the bracing is finished, the rest is easy. Take it slow and easy my friend. Stay cool and run steam....
Some say carpenter,,,,,,,, Hey , is'nt that what I do for a living?LOL Grey, doing something with your own hands can be a rewarding and learning exp. Looks good from my end, now get that track down and run some trains. Adios Wyatt
Congrats. I know it feels good to finally begin the real work after so many months of planning. Reminds me that I need to get back to work on mine. Later,
Phase I is 3x7 with overflow into Phase II Phase II is 3 X 7 with overflow into Phase III Phase 3 is 3 X 9 Very close to scale. [ June 27, 2005, 06:51 AM: Message edited by: Grey One ]
Bench Work Done!, (mostly) Phase I Phase 1 and 2 Phase 1,2 and 3 Notice the different structure of each phase. Basicaly I was experimenting. I expect I will need more support in the Phase 1 / 2 Phase 3
The bench work looks great to me Steve. I wish I had the space you have available. The track plan looks great too. It's amazing how rapidly things start to come together once you get started. Can't wait to see your planned layout come to life . John
Steve: Before you put down the foam, make sure you paint/seal the wood to prevent warping etc. Stay cool and run steam....
Oooooppss. Good idea. I have not fastened anything . Just cut and laid it in place on Phase One and some of the other two areas. Pics tomorrow. I am very happy to say I have run trains successfully.
Shaping up nicely. I second the painting idea. Not only will it help prevent warping, it gives it a "finished" look and camoflages less than perfect carpentry. Painting now it's easier to get to some spots that would be tough to get to once the top is secured.
Bob and John, Will do. I expect it will be a sealer for now. Pics of trains on blue foam coming tonight.
Steve, Looks good. Have been watching the G&G being planned for what seems like forever. Glad to see you getting to live your dream of building it. Can't even begin to describe how green I am. Wish I had the space to start my dream layout. Israel [ June 28, 2005, 07:54 AM: Message edited by: Israel2004 ]
Israel Welcome to the forum, I notice it's your first post. Thanks for coming in from the cold lurker domain. While waiting for the space for a "dream layout" don't ignore the possibilities of a small shelf layout, a door layout (like mine) if you're in N scale, or any other opportunity to actually build something instead of waiting for the big space score. jmho Regards
Espeeman: Thanks! Israel, it has been forever, and ever., (about 30 years anyway). My frist post was around October I am honored to be your first post. Welcome Aboard!!!
Pics of the GandG with trains ready to run: All of 6/27/05: The track where the bullet train sits is part of 28" curves. At some point that will go up and over the track that currently splits it. 4 1/2 Inches of Foam. "Sea Level" is 2 inches above bench work. The yard at Grandure is 2 1/2 Inches above sea level.
