UPDATE: Not much new in the modeling or purchasing department. I did start cleaning out the basement with my wife so we can decide on my real estate for my layout. To get their my last weekend project was building a storage shelving rack. With that done and the basement almost cleaned I will hopefully proceed to build my bench work in a few weeks. AHEAD OF SCHEDULE . This way I can leave my kato M2 out while I start to collect my track.

With that I read and looked at more pictures of the kicking horse pass area and decided to slightly modify my track and scenic plan.

Although, I am modeling a non prototypical layout. I still want to be authentic to the area as possible, while fulfilling my layout operation needs. Therefore, these are the changes I made.
    1) got rid of the long siding along the one edge of the layout as my area in question is mostly single main line.

    2) turned the second tunnel after the curved bridge to a daylight canyon pass. The engineers decided to blast out the tunnel rather then convert it for intermodel traffic.

    3) simplified the yard in Field with one track spur going to the shop. While setting it up for true to life operations.

So a quick update. Its been a while since I posted but things are going to be moving forward a little bit. I decided to go green when building by Layout. This past week I took a few 8 by 4 pallets form next door to my work with their ok. I proceeded to take them apart to recycle the 2 by 4 for the framing of my layout plus some of the wooded slates for bracing. Pics to come.

Here we go. Made some cuts before dinner. Still a fare bit to go. The 4 by 8s actually in great condition despite being lower grade wood for skids.

Right on. I reuse whenever possible. Looks like you'll have some solid benchwork.

Some of the lumber in my modules has been salvaged and re-used several times.

Don't forget the fact you are stretching your hobby budget. Money saved can be used to buy a desired engine, cars, or?

Here is some more progress from yesterday. Have the outer frame and outer leg cross beams fastened. More to come.

Well built benchwork sure pays big dividends later! Looks like a good start!

Definitely. Since i am forgoing placing plywood as my base and using a cardboard under lay-ment with a 3 inch foam base on top to level out my track height while carving in lower grade topography. I want the framing solid as i go light weight as on all my past layouts.

I find a plywood base on top of solid framing over kill on mobile small layouts as it adds to the weight.

Here are some pics of the finished bench work. Final measurements 36 by 96 inches at 48 inches high with another 3 for in foam to come at a later date. Its rock solid to boot.

As of now going to line with sturdy cardboard as sub base for the foam to keep it light.

I finally got my bench work finished for test fitting track. Once I get all the track for my layout and track tested. Then comes the 3 inch foam base, drilling 1 inch holes through the cross beams for my bus and installing fascia. Then the fun part of wiring my track.

In the mean time I will collect my track and rolling stock as well as back to the tree making I go.

Nice progress so far. Any possibility of you getting more of that space in the future? I really liked your trackplan in post #22. It will let you have two longer trains on the layout at once and looking at the renderings, it didn't seem too crowded track-wise and seemed to have more operation potential, if needed.

Trevor. For now sticking with the 3 by 8, we are currently in a small town house and a few years out from upgrading to a larger house. I am sharing space with my kids playroom. Once we move I am planning on a larger layout. This is a starter to perfect my craft.

As for my rendering in post 22. I decided to go the one main without bypass as I decided to focus on my scenery and modeling remote single line CP rail in BC. However once I have most of my track I might go back to the bypass. Still up in the air.
