Kind of a year end update if you will.
After getting the house somewhat finished, I stepped away from the layout to sell off some of the herd.

I'm trying to get back in gear now that holidays are over.
I had picked up a Showcase Miniatures Delony's Barn to go along with the farm house. I had sat it aside when I ordered some of the Deluxe Roket Glue for the kit. The other day I finally sat down and started to work on it.

First time I've done a laser kit like this, kind of fiddly, but it came out just fine.

I still need to put the finishing touches on it, but I couldn't resist trying some weathering on it. So I dug out some Pan Pastels.

Still trying to decide if I need to add small patches of white or red paint under the eaves to show a little bit of paint that might be left on it?

So as it stands right now, this is where I'm at. With the barn together and the other outbuildings ready, I can finally figure out the layout of them and start carving the floral foam to its final shape.

The foam landscape between Ruston and Winnfield.

    Winnfield

    The abandoned farm scene.
There will be an access road/driveway crossing the tracks between the two turnouts then up the floral foam.
The little Red building will be a hog yard and the green building will be the garage.

Another addition I plan to add to the scene is a trailer trash family who inherited the land and just moved a mobile home on site.

My plan for the upcoming year will be to get the foam terraformed, painted, then get the backdrop repainted and start working on the scenery in this location. We'll see how the chips fall.

Looks like a neighbors place. 2 streets down and half way down that street. One of the few times I think HOA's MIGHT be of use.:censored:

HOA's are horrible. I have to deal with one for a well system I take care of. They are just an excuse for bullies to bully folk into whatever they want.

However, sometimes the neighbors can make life. "interesting."

Sounds like some good plans Allen. I really like how that barn turned out. A very faded red or white patch up under the eaves might just be a nice touch. That trailer scene will be neat too.

I can't wait to see the trailer trash set, should be here next month?
I don't want a lot of paint on the barn, but just a hint showing it had paint at one time should be enough.

That barn is a GEM! What a kit! The weathering and distressing you applied is perfect.
The "trailer trash" set will crank the realism up another notch, too. Just add some tall static grass for the overgrown, unkempt look.

    Thanks!
Just to be clear Hemi, all I added was the weathering to the barn, it's a laser cut kit and those missing boards and planks are lasered into the facade.

I'm looking forward to the Trailer Trash kit, it'll be the first 3D item I've ever dealt with, so there should be plenty of teeny weenie painting involved in it.
Better get my cheaters out and polished up. I'm also gonna have to brush up on my static grass methods to make things look overgrown and unkempt.

    ;)

I think the trailer trash family may have inherited the trailer too...

I have a couple of ne'er-do-well cousins who have taken over my grandparents' old house. You know the sort, where any store you go into in town, when they learn your last name, they ask you about your cousins and their unpaid bills... They tore down the post & rail fence and parked their cars in the front yard. The view from the back of the house has a panoramic view of a tall bluff that was mistaken for the Buffalo River in a picture in National Geographic in the '50's

One thing I wanted to do to this barn was give it corrugated metal roof.

I found some online from a company that had some, but was unsure of the actual size as they just said it for "HO & N". So I took a chance and I got lucky. Looks close enough for me.

I glued the roof supplied by Showcase Miniatures to the barn so I had a good solid base to work on and to help keep the kit structurally sound.
I started by cutting the material into roughly 3' x 10' strips. It's pretty heavy foil and it doesn't seem to flatten out like typical foil would.

So I got started, piece by piece....

Once I get it all glued on, painted and weathered, I'll come back and roughen it up a bit and bend some of the edges for an aged, wind blown looked.

After a small break from modeling I got started on the Showcase Miniatures Delony's Barn kit the other day. Decent kit.
I decided I wanted corrugated roofing on it so I could weather it for the abandoned farm scene.

I painted it with a Vallejo Neutral gray, used a black wash and then stippled on some craft paints for the rust.
The outer faces of the barn I applied Pan Pastels for a weathered look.

I took the house one step further and applied some moss on the roof, liked it enough that I added some to the barn as well.

With this step complete, I can now start forming the floral foam for the farmland.

Allen- Is your moss essentially paint, or is there more to add texture?
