Regarding the EL observation cars, IMO, there's more that a passing resemblance to the Budd-built blunt-end sleepers for the Sunset Limited. Remove the corrugated siding below the windows and add rear windows to the SP car then see if you don't agree that there is some basic commonality with the EL car:
