Rich C: Welcome to TrainBoard. The Sand Spring Railway has a very interesting design. How did you attach the bridge to make the mainline track a continuous loop? What is the length of the span?
Continuous Run Loop on Sand Springs Layout Bob, The loop / bridge is about 5ft long. Two layers of 3/4" plywood covered in 1/2 homasote, this combination gives it strength and weight. One end of the loop rest in a cradle on the fascia (but attached to solid framework underneath). The second end rest on a ledge. Both ends have pins through the frame to keep them locked into place. I have 3 support legs but have learned 1 is sufficient. The bridge can be hit or bumped but does not move. To date, there have been no accidents. I will post pictures of the supports. Rich C
Rich: Thats very interesting. Many folks here on TrainBoard have looked for a design that would span a doorway or a large opening in order to make an around the room layout a continuous run. Many have refrained from doing so because they didn't know how to design the "bridge". Thanks for offering to post photo's of the design of the "bridge" on your layout. It's a great idea. Have fun building a "bridge" for a continuous loop......
Very nice work! It's good to see a layout with some familiar places! But boy was I disappointed when I found out you were not in the Tulsa area.
I grew up in Sand Springs in the 50's and 60's, watching the Sand Springs and Frisco Railroads. Thanks to all, for your interest, I know that we have had fun operating this little shortline and I will keep you posted. Richard Cook
Welcome to Trainboard- nice layout! Do you have a track plan you can post? (after looking at his SSRY album) Why yes, you do. Looks like it would be fun to operate! Also, did you ever get the chance to cross the river & watch the Tulsa-Sapulpa Union in action?
Welcome to Trainboard! Saw your pics of modeling Frisco in Pensacola, and FYI the frisco.org site is a great treasure trove of things Frisco.
Where are any pictures of this layout? Ans: Here is a link to the RailImages pages with two albums on this excellent layout.
Rich, No sure how I miss your post.....Awesome photos. Guys I have had the pleasure to operate on Rich layout and it was totally fun and he has a great layout.
Hi Dwyane, Good to hear from you again. Don't forget there is a layout tour June 6th for DFW layouts, come by for a visit. Rich C
HemiAdda2d, Typically I operate the Sand Springs Branch with two SW8's, the West Tulsa Interchange with one or two (Frisco MP-15's, Frisco VO1000 or Frisco RS3M) the Muskogee branch with MKT RS3M. Occassionally we have steam day and we operate with Katy and Frisco 2-8-0's. Please remember this is a shortline railroad - but it does not lack in enjoyment. With regret, I still own far too many, modern diesels, brass steam engines and a shamefull amount of rolling stock, all now gather dust as I enjoy operating with less than 5% of the equipment I own. For several years I have operated with the "less is more attitude", with much pleasure. Rich C http://www.trainboard.com/grapevine/album.php?u=13249
This looks fantastic, Rich. I would be very interested to see some of your benchwork construction, and especially for the bridge. I'm looking to put one in, myself.
