I'm sorry, but no diesel-electric can ever compare to a wonderful steam locomotive like the Hudson.

Hank, I love that NY Central Hudson film and own a copy of it in VHS. The part about the firebox and shoveling coal--I remember doing that in the cellar of our house as a youngster, and am sure that others that did that became firemen, as it was the same priniciple. Build the fire and keep it low (the coal), shake the grates and get rid of clinkers. When the coal got low, we would call (Johnnie Gillen) and get a ton or two delivered to the cellar coal bin. It was a lot like dealing with the fire in the locomotives.
Ah, I have drifted back in memory. Last weekend riding behind steam was a great memory booster too. Having experienced New York Central steam I never had a thought about Southern Pacific or Santa Fe steam. In my old age I have experienced both, and they are great reminders of those past days on the water level route. I remain upset to this day that the Central did not see fit to preserve at least ONE Hudson.
