https://www.railpictures.net/photo/366789/ More interesting stuff about this unit-look at the fuel tank, it's off a GE! Only thing I can think of about the number board, is it must've clipped something, cause the engineers side number board is normal! Oh, and the stripes on it are lower than normal too. Originally CB&Q unit.
The number board on the other side is the normal oval shape as seen in this photo: The fireman's side board must have been damaged and replaced or ? Doug
That's either a cam on the fireman's side window, or someone left they're Chinese take-out on the dash....
Early morning line up in Kansas City. The Chicago bound Southwest Chief on the left and the St. Louis bound Morning Missouri River Runner on the right. October 19, 2009.
From July 1978 at Princeton Jct., NJ, two Trenton-bound Gs hustle past. The angled signal to the left on the signal bridge protects the branch to Princeton. My goodness, how can this slide be 45 years old already?
The branch to Princeton still survives, and is still known as the Dinky, even in the NJ Transit timetable.
From March 1975 at Chicago's Union Station, a French built RTG Turboliner is on its way. Amtrak deployed these in service from Chicago to St. Louis, Milwaukee and Detroit. Those PRR dwarf signals are neat. I seem to remember standing here at the end of the platform and hearing a bang and whoosh of air, this being my introduction to former PRR electro-pneumatic interlockings. I had no idea what was going on. I took this with my Kodak Instamatic with 126 film, assuring a lousy result. At the time it was all I had and any picture with a train in it was good.
From April 1980 at Rondout, IL on the Milwaukee Road, the westbound Empire Builder hastens across the EJ&E. Next stop, Milwaukee. Rondout Tower would remain in service another 35 years, closing in 2015. In the second photo taken moments later, the Builder has passed under the North Shore's branch to Mundelein. The Milwaukee's branch to Fox Lake, IL can be seen between the pickup truck and the crossing flashers.
This reminds me of a long, long time friend, who worked third trick there for many years. I always wanted to make it back that way, and visit him at work.
Wow, that would have been a rare treat. It remained a busy place in the '70s and '80s and probably beyond. Is there a way to upload MP3s to Trainboard? Somewhere I have some cassette tapes with scanner chatter at Rondout in the late '70s. (I miss the long radio range that flat land allowed. I could receive base station railroad chatter from 40 miles away.)
From 03/18/1984 at Tuscaloosa, AL, a southbound Crescent crosses the ICG (former M&O) at a long abandoned tower that's since been razed.
