I happened to catch a very colorful train leaving Raleigh this morning. It is train 351, a Raleigh to Roanoke (Va.) train. It generally takes a lot of motors back with it. Today it had 7 locos (in various roads and colors), 95 cars and was only 6600 feet. Harold
What a catch! This is a former Algoma Central SD40-2, second of five built for the road. Note the blower duct (it's not beaded, a GMDD -2 feature)
schweet pics HH can I use these ? I'm always questioned about my choice of lashups, man this is GREAT evidence to shut up the nit-pickers at n-trak shows BTW is the sd45 a dash-2?? the trucks would seem to be from a original sd45! like the FURX leaser... gives me an idea for those pesky BN sd40-2's that EVERYONE has, and they have the same DCC address!!

I could tell it appeared to have Canadian heritage, but didn't know anything else about it. It is also the first time I have caught a WC unit leading on NS. Harold
You can use the pics... Proof Positive! I think the SD45 is a straight 45. (The original SD45-2's did not have the flared radiators). I have seen some SD45 bodied rebuilt units (that have 3000 hp prime movers) that have the water sight glass added, ala -2. They are classified as SD40-2's. The FURX leaser would make a good and easy conversion. I have seen many more that are HLCX owned. If you go to my RailImages album, I have a sub-album entitled Lease Units that has some pictures of various leasers. Harold
As far as I know all 45-2 had straight radiators. They're also about the length of a 40T-2 or a 50. About. So, is that former SF 45 a true 20 cylinder or has it been downrated? I always think it's wierd to see Wisconsin Central units that aren't SD45s. When I lived in Chicago, I would never see anything but 45s. I think I saw one GP40 and occasionally an F45. Otherwise, nothing but flairs.
A few notes... SD45-2s are the same length as a SD40-2. NREX 6414 is a true SD45. Sight glasses are not a -2 marker... SP and IC had pre -2 EMDs with sight glasses (it was an option made standard on the -2 line). SP in particular had SD45s with sight glasses...
I had not seen the sight glasses on non-dash 2 units, but then again, I had not seen many SP units More great info! Thanks, Robbman Harold
Still not the same (by ~3.5' for the SD40T-2, ~1.5ft for the SD50). You're not going to fit a 20-cyl 645 into an engine compartment made for a 16 cyl 645, as the SD40T-2 and SD50 both have.
I'm basing it totally on comparing some old Proto power shells, They eyeball pretty close is all I'm saying.
