By chance was the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati & Indianapolis RY merged into the T&OC? If so, is there a date known? If not, would it have gone into the CCC&St.L? Boxcab E50
Ken, the history of the road appears in Solomon and Schafer's "New York Central". Cleveland, Columbus & Cincinnati chartered 1836, construction started 1847. Later partnered with Little Miami and Columbus and Xenia. 1848 Bellefontaine & Indiana and Indianapolis & Bellefontaine incorporated. 1853 those two merged and became known as the B Line. CC&C took over B linein 1868, resulting in the Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Indianapolis. 1889 it became part of the Big Four. Whew! The book says they called it the Big Four to save chalk. I can see why after typing all those city names!
Thanks LEW & Fitz. I can see why the "Big Four" versus spelling out, or saying the entire name. I have found several railroads that had such lengthy names in that area. I suppose that a few may have eventually had something to do with the CCC&St.L. Boxcab E50
A neat place I once railfanned was UNION CITY, OH. / UNION CITY, IN. If I remember correctly, the Penn Central put the plaque on the surviving Big Four's station in Union, In., therefore saving it from some local volunteer FD's practice building!
Johnny,I think that was the PRR depot and I believe it is now a local museum.Anyway you are correct it was a great place to rail fan at one time Before they abandoned the PRR from Logansport to Columbus they ran about 8 trains a day each way through Union City to Marion,In. and to Elk. 2 each way Anderson-Elk.just about filled up a 100 mile single track operating under timetable and trainorder with just 3 sidings that would hold 130 cars apiece.
