I'm starting over after 45 years. Obviously I'm overwhelmed w/the changes in model RRing. I've pretty much decided on NCE DCC PowerCab (other consideration is Digitrack) & Peco switches and Tortoise (or?) switch machines on an HO layout. The rough plan includes ~20 -25 switches (which includes 2 double slips, 2 - 3Wyes & 3-4 Y's) w/about 6 crossings & 2 or 3 reverse loops. I will probably only run a maximum of 3, more likely just 1 or 2 locos @ a time. I don't have any long wheel base engines. It's been suggested that I use Tortoise switch machines for ease of installation, operation & simply "a more fun experience". Track will be mostly nickel silver w/a bit of brass for some sidings. I've been reading a lot in the forums & have learned much, but there is so much to catch up on & so little time. Here are a few questions that I specifically have.
    1) Should I use Insulfrog or Electrofrog Peco switches? I've been told Insulfrog is best but have read that elecros work fine.
    2) Does one or the other work better w/DCC? Or does it depend on whether it's NCE or DIgitrack or the particular model within the brand? Is one or the other type of switch easier to install?
    3) Do double slips, wyes, Y's, and crossings need special treatments? For example, I think that I was told that double slips need 2 Tortoise machines.
    4) Do Tortoises have to be mounted underneath? In some places I have little or no room under table. Are there any adaptor/accessories for unobtrusive mounting on top of board? Or, is there another machine that I can use for hard to reach (read "nearly impossible") areas that have turnouts/switches?
BTW...what are those side extension things (looks like they're added to the contact edge of the machine) used for? The answer is probably in an article that I just haven't yet read.
    5) Can NCE or Digitrack handle this setup? From what I've read so far it seems that NCE has the greater flexibility & expansion capacity. I may not have read enough yet, so that's why I ask for input. I will be watching U-Tube stuff tonight to get a better idea ~which system looks more comfortable but I'm seeking input from regular folks that use the products.
I think that's all my questions/concerns for right now. I look forward to reading responses, getting ideas/tips/suggestion/recommendations/cautions, etc. like web sites that I should look at. You help is appreciated. I hope I submitted to the right forum.
