Looking for suggestions. A local hobby store recommended the LGB diesel unit. What do you guys recommend and why?

    Thanks,

    Cleaners

    Roushraven,
I use a battery powered, scratch built engine to pull a track cleaning car...The car can use either a fine sanding type pad, or 3M scotchbrite pads. I let it run around the track for a while, then run a clean cloth over to remove any residues. It has worked well this summer.

U can find some pics of it in this thread.....

    Also, the engine in here......post#51

The battery power allows me to run the engine with little prior cleaning, other than to remove debris.......

    Regards,

I want to show you a link of an item I'm about to pick up and swap my USA Trains BN Boxcar Shell Onto (Video courtesy of Large Scale Online via Youtube. All Copyrights belong to MNP and LSOL): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bL7DECDsDGk

As for the LGB Locomotive, I owned one a few months ago, wasn't happy with it and took it back. It was loud, noisy, and didn't do well on my tracks.

There are at least 4 or 5 different companies that make various track maintenance trains for G scale. LGB is the only one that I know of that makes a commercially made track maintenance locomotives. The other G scale manufacturers that I have seen make track maintenance trains with rolling stock which even those are pricey. There is a vendor on Ebay that had thier own G scale train store in California that sells scotch brite pad attachments for Aristocraft 2 wheel rolling stock. I attached mine to a 2 wheel 20ft Aristocraft gondolla and made a maintenance track car from it and it works great. I added a piece of of aluminum roll stock in the car for added weight for cleaning. This was the least expensive for me and I like how it works, I only have around $50 invested here. The best is to make your own.

I use the LGB Track Cleaning loco but I reversed the rotation of the cleaning wheels - a tip I picked up from somebody yers ago, I find it works much better that way.

So you have the cleaning wheels rotating in the same direction as the drive wheels??? Interesting.
