I had no problems with XtrckCad. I find it a bit more difficult than Atlas' RTS but it is more versatile and powerful.

The secret to XtraCad is to watch and follow the tutorials. They are well written and really help unlike most tutorials.

Thanks Chris. I'll have to read the tutorials carefully in the next few days.

I found that Xtrkcad was pretty easy to learn. It just took a little playing with, and I found most functions of the layout design pretty intuitive, really no more difficult than the Atlas program, but there is a little more to learn because it is more powerful. It is much more versatile than the Atlas program, it has a large track database from most of the leading brands and gives you the ability to create any pieces that are not already included in the program. The best part of it is the simulator program. It allows you to run your trains through the layout design to see if everything works the way you want it to, like if your yards are long enough and your passing sidings are in the right place. The car inventory part of the program is less intuitive and has a few odd quirks in it.

I just checked the web site for Xtrkcad... but can't find where or how to download it for Windows XP.

    Any help here?

    Thanks!

Man... I tried to put in the parameters of the basement (with house over it) that I'm buying here in the DFW Metroplex, and it says:

"Room size greater than 96 x 48 only available with Level 1."

What's that all about, and how do I get around it?

    Thanks!

I have abandoned Xtrackcad. I never felt like I had achieved any level of mastery with the product.

I am now using 3rdPlanIt and I found it well worth the $84 more that it cost than Xtrckcad or RTS. I am back focused on my layout, not my computer. They have an excellent yahoo forum that is very helpful as well. Lots of problems disappeard. It is superior in 2d to Xtrakcad and it has working 3d as well!

    XTrkCad help needed

Howdy. I'm trying to figure out the Parallel Tracks feature on XTrkCad.

I CAN make parallel tracks, that's not the issue. What I CANNOT figure out is how to pull up the thing to set the distance between them and such. I've checked the help (or lack thereof) menu three times, and it shows it just great, but not how to get to the thing.

    Please help!

    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

Thanks for the registration info Tim. I quit 4x8 layouts many years ago. I need to post a simple trackplan in my railimages album and I thought this would be the best way to go. Now I have the correct room size.
