For the last month, we have been doing some track work at the local museum. We are working on an old exchange track between the old C&O line and the old Erie, which is now museum trackage. Since we are going to fall under FRA rules we are needing to upgrade a lot of our track. The first section needs upwards of 150 ties.

Here is the section of track, all the orange spots are bad ties.

Here is the other half, which has had many of the ties replaced already. Once the ties are in, we will need to tammp everything, and that will be done with jack hammers, since we don't have a tammping machine.

The track will still need to be raised and more ballast added.

I've got the easy job, tie removal. Many of these ties are rotted and just break apart under the force of the backhoe.

Making room for the new ties.

Driving in the spikes. This is very hard work.

Here is a video showing the insertion of a new tie. It's big, 12 meg, and you will need Quicktime. We are looking at converting it to something more friendly, but for now, this will have to do.

Cool video! Yeah, the backhoe is the ONLY way to go! ;) Just hope you don't sneeze when the other two guys are lining up the tie! [IMG]
