CLARENDON, Texas May 28 — Two freight trains collided head-on Tuesday, killing one person and injuring several others, authorities said.

The fiery 9 a.m. crash of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe trains filled the air with smoke that could be seen for miles.

"We can see the smoke from here," said Kathy Taylor, an assistant manager at a Dairy Queen restaurant in Clarendon, three miles west of the crash site.

Authorities did not know what cargo the trains were carrying, or where they were bound. The accident occurred on a main rail link between Fort Worth, Amarillo and Denver.

One person was killed, and the number and severity of the injuries of the others was not immediately known, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said.

About 2,000 people live in Clarendon, about 50 miles southeast of Amarillo.

I feel sorry for the families.. I imagine the trains look like somebody dropped a can of pick up sticks.

One of the engineers, Damen Shelby, 61 was killed in this head-on collision on 5/28 on the BNSF in Texas. Two other crewmen were airlifted to hospitals in Amarillo, Tx. with critical injuries.

The front end of engine #8876 was caved in even with the crew cab. Another was laying on its side off track. The other engines of both trains were on the ground except one.

The news coverage showed a number of cars that were scattered along over the right of way. One hopper car and a high side coal hauler were bent sideways almost folded in to a "U" shape.

Both trains were at speed, and several cars and engines caught fire creating a good deal of heavy sooty smoke that could be seen for miles. No further details have been released at this time.
