I have a 40 year old Lionel transformer for my American Flyer train set. I am considering buying a new transformer. What would be a good way to go? How many amps will I need? All of my locomotives are steam. How many amps will they require? Happy New Year, ST
Are you running original Flyer steamers or newer ones by S Helper or American Models? I don't know about a new transformer, but you can get original 8B transformers on Ebay for dirt cheap. One of them will easily run any of the original Flyer steamers. Even thou they are old, a little cleaning up of the contacts inside and they are like new. You can also look for a 15B or 16B, or if you want dual control, a 30B. My father uses all of these kind on his hi rail layout, and they are still going strong after all these years. -Mike
