There's nothing wrong with modeling an overcast day, as long as there are visual clues that it is overcast:
I haven't taken a model photo outside yet. The above layout was sitting on my kitchen table, I put the 100W bulb in a desk lamp and clicked the photo. Very low tech, I'm no pro. I liked the shadow of the goose neck lamp over the door.
