It's cool looking at the variations in weathering & details like ditchlights and lighting groups, or the lack of. Cool pix SP!
Great pictures! I like the one with the bell and beacon on the cab roof. Also like the horns on the cab of some of the others.
IMHO, a rebuild, or speed lettered (by DRGW Denver Burnham Shops), meant that the horns were moved back to the long hood and off of the cab roof. But, look at SP8281 above. It has the Roman lettering and the horn is on the long hood. Always an exception and many, many variations. I don't remember seeing a speed lettered TM with the horns on the cab roof?
Great shots! Looks like someone bumped into the forward sanding lever on SP8271 ! Boy am I glad that I've *never*done that before !
I have seen it more than once in Mojave yard. This picture shows the SYNTAC (Skyline Mine - Trona Coal) with three AC9-44CW's, with all the sanders going, after climbing the Tehachapi's. Was cool hearing the air whistling out of the hoses.
I have seen a few with the horns on the cab roof, as is this SD45T-2, with a very high horn, bell, and gum ball machine, all on the cab roof. Thom
Nice photos.... I can remember catching my first tunnel motor on the NS about 15-20 years ago I must have burned a couple of rolls of film on that one unit alone. Harold
Hemi That is EMD lease 772. I did a search on her, and she now works for Iowa Interstate as there 707. She's a GP38-2.
Hey Thom you definately cornered the SP market locally in SoCal during the late eighties, to early nineties. Here are a few images from the SP during the early to mid-eighties. First image taken at the Glendale, Ca depot of a westbound TOFC train Next I was chasing this train led by a T-Motor, because if you look at the firemans side of the loco, you can see an individual kinda hanging out, he was a friend of mine who got lucky outside of Bakersfield when the crew asked him if he wanted a cab ride over the mountain! Next is an example of a T-motor on the point of Amtrak's Coast Starlight #11, this was in 1986 during the Santa Fe influenced era with the rotary beacons. Here is a set of helpers in San Timeteo Canyon with some T-Motors in its consist.
awesome shots Mike!! Your freind was a very lucky guy getting that cab ride in a L window SD45T-2!! Im jealous!! Also love that M.U. cable hanging around 9211's UDE! Thom
