Ok, here's a couple of photos to make you think, two photos, taken from approximately the same spot in Harrisburg, Illinois, but about 50 years apart. First shot, of course, is looking north from the hump at Harrisburg Yard in the mid-1950's -- substantial number of loaded hoppers appear to be in the bowl yard. Second picture, is the same view looking north in 2007. This once busy yard was torn out less than 20 years ago, and there is little or no evidence that it ever existed!! Good photos from down that way. I was through Harrisburg a few times many year ago now, but don’t remember what was there. But I do remember when the Cairo line was still running coal drags and such through Cark County. I wish I’d been smart enough to take photos back then. inch
Roger, a sad commentary on the demise of the railroads. With the increase in freight traffic, the pulling up of "redundant" track is coming back to haunt the railroads. :tb-sad:
Jim- It's the modern business model. Which has been hurting us for several decades now= Quick buck, short term. Couple that to industry expectations that when the time comes to do major reconstruction, of removed, or new lines, they're planning on the taxpayers, (us), to finance it all for them. Boxcab E50
