I know that a company named Ulrich is now making tractor-trailers in H0 scale. We auctioned one of those at the recent NMRA Lone Star Region convention; it is a very nice model.

Today someone brought an old Ulrich open hopper car kit to the club. It was H0 scale, all metal, and a very nice kit. How long has Ulrich been around? Is this current company the same as the old one? Anyone have any of these old cars on their layout? Pictures? Thanks.

    Flash,
It's my understanding Ulrich has been around since the 50's. I believe they were marketed exclusively by Walther's for many years. I don't have any of the freight cars but I do have several of the Mack and Kenworth truck kits, as well as the latest PIE and Schlitz trucks. IIRC they were not listed in the Walthers catalogs in the late 70's. I remember purchasing some of the truck and trailer castings from Truck Stop Models in the early to mid 90's not sure who was making them at that time.

I bought and built an Ulrich kit sometime within a year or so of 1950. I don't remember what the kit was, but do remember that it was all cast metal and screwed together.

Thanks, Grampy. Nice photo. Probably don't have to add weight to these cars.

    Flash:
Don't have a photo of them specifically, but my two Ulrich cars are a GS gondola lettered for Rio Grande, and a WWII "Ermergency" gondola lettered for Santa Fe. The GS Rio Grande is all metal, the Santa Fe has a wood deck. Great, SOLID cars. Screwdriver assembly. Went together in about an hour each (with a little filing), the details still stand up pretty well, today. If I could find some more of the old kits, I'd have a fleet of the GS gondolas--they look just as good as the more recently released Red Caboose plastic ones, and track a million times better. Those Ulrich models had detail and HEFT!
