I know they are trying to stylize the merger partners schemes but this one should have been left a little more traditional. The rear of the unit is great but the nose is lacking a little IMO. Would have looked really good with the continuation of the stylized four stripe scheme across the nose. grant
Hmmmm.... Not perfect by any means, but they didn't really screw it up! I was pretty certain we wouldn't see the freight colors, but I was afraid they would make the 'Bumble Bee' or 'Zephyr' schemes into abortions. I expected any 'silver' to be the 'silver-gray' used on the WP Heritage unit. All in all they did OK, don't think I'd want a model of it, (or any others for that matter), but they did OK. 2slim
Much I am disgruntled with UP about some things, they sure have a 'hit' on their hands with these (what I call) 'legacy' paint schemes!! Hmmm ... wonder if BNSF could be enticed into doing something similar given their heritage roads? And maybe CSX .. and ... etc., etc., etc!! A model railroaders dream!! :teeth:
For the record, I was pretty impressed with this one. I still think I like the Katy unit the best... so far. As a midwester, I remember much, much more of the Chicago and Northwestern than the other roads, so I am eagerly anticipating the Northwestern unit later this summer. While I ain't the biggest UP fan, I do commend them for their Heritage program. With the competition between the two western roads, don't count out the BNSF doing something, once all 6 UP's are out an the intrigue wears off, early next year...
I Like it, except for the UP part. I could see the real Rio Grande doing something on this level in today age.
Not bad, I like it better than the other ones, needs more grime though to be a real DRG&W Can't wait to see the CNW later this summer.
The rear half looks like Rio Grande, the front half looks like Real Crap. What's with the artsy-fartsy schemes?
I'm with Bob. the rear was well-executed, but where's the stripes?????? All 'Grande hood unit power had STRIPES on long and short hood ends..... Shoulda just painted it silver, and been done with it. That gray looks all wrong, and they won't wash it as often as it'll need it...
I think the grey would have been better sky color than grey, like a rich blue as that of the skies around there. I am sure all knows that the artsy-fartsy front end represents the beautiful Rocky mountains. And lets face it it is a whole heck of alot better than UP Grey and Yellow. Something like this (quick a crude) Just an idea.
Steve Don't tell me I have to do that on my own. I still don't know if I should mask the black lines or use stripes.
