I photographed UP 5764 last night in Anderson Indiana on a CSX eastbound. It carries the designation C44ACCTE on the side. I know what a C44AC is, but what is CTE?

It stands for Controlled-Tractive Effort. From the reports I've seen, a C44AC at full tractive effort (180,000 lbs, I believe) can cause problems in DPU or helper service. These new units have a feature that allows the useable tractive effort to be effectively reduced when used in manifest DPU service. How this is done, I have no idea. I would assume that it lowers the horsepower output or AC power generation.
