Those are great pictures. All so clear and sharp. Looks like the UP failed to repaint those SP engines.

Links worked fine for me. Strange to see those locomotives standing on the soil!

Thanks for the pics, although sad to see.

Great photos, Brett. As I stated, I was on my way back to Bakersfield from Las Vegas when the derailment happened, passing through Mojave around 8:15 (reports said it happened around that time). I passed some of the emergency response vehicles heading toward the scene near Monolith. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to make the trip out to the scene so your photos are even more appreciated.

Thanks to all who replied and enjoyed the pictures...can you enjoy these kinds of shots?? Anyway, it was fun going to get them...uhh again the question can you have fun?? I'm getting myself into an awful quagmire!

Colonel, glad you finally got to the shots without going crazy.

Telegrapher, those may have been some of the best shots I've ever taken. The photo gods were being very good to me that day!

Kevin, Hope you left a little coin in our fair city, (I'm in Vegas for those who don't know), it keeps me from having a state income tax. It's ok if you took a little with you too. Always fun to screw the casinos!! [IMG]

Alan, well not much to reply to, but I figured I'd better not leave you out. Thanks for your warm welcome over the last few days!

Glad to be a part of the group...

    Brett,
I wish I knew you 2 years ago when I was in Vegas with the family would have loved to have done some train chasing. The only UP action I saw was from my motel room window in the Circus Circus Casino.

    Colonel,

Two years ago I was barely getting into any real railfanning. I probably would have been boring to be with, because I didn't have a clue about anything when it came to railfanning the Southwest.

Anyway, you have an open invitation during your next visit to the States to come hang out and we'll go see some trains. [IMG]

Brett, we were corresponding on this subject over on TrainOrders. I am "nycman" there. The Antelope Valley Press reimbursement for photos I know not. I expect it would be little or nothing. MojaveBill reported that the AV Press finally published photos Saturday. Welcome to TrainBoard, the REAL site. :D

Enjoy?? No. Appreciate?? Definitely. I never enjoy these kinds of shots, but since seeing rail equipment in this state is rare, my curiosity is always working when something like this occurs. I'm just glad that no one was seriously injured, and the crew will be able to work another day. A rail accident hits close to home to me, as my son's godfather is a UP engineer out of Bakersfield. He was actually scheduled to work the train that ran away on Cajon in 1989, but for some reason didn't make the trip (the exact reason escapes me after 12 years).

As for my Vegas trip, I'm proud to say that my trip was cost free and I actually brought some extra funding back to California with me. Not to worry, though. Your tax free life is not jeopardized by the likes of me. The gaming industry is funded by people who drop more money on a single hand of Blackjack than I took with me on my trip. They don't even notice when I win a little cash on the quarter and dollar machines. I do have a good time when I go, whether I drop all of my playing money or not. For the money, Nevada is the place to go just to get away from work for a couple of days (being less than 5 hours away from home makes it easy, too).

I'm glad you enjoy it here at TrainBoard. Keep coming back and keep up the good work...
