A Union Pacific train T-Boned an Iowa Interstate train(article said two UP trains but that was incorrect): http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080215/VIDEO01/80215037 http://www.desmoinesregister.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080215/NEWS/80215033
If anyone hears more about this, it would be interesting to learn some details. Anyone have a map showing that trackage? Boxcab E50
How about a shot from Google Earth? Short Line Jct., just east of downtown and the Iowa state capitol complex. The tracks running east-west are IAIS (former CRIP), while the north-south line is UP (ex-CNW). Before that, this was also the so-called "spine Line" of the Rock Island between Minneapolis & Kansas City. Back when I lived here in the 1960s, the area under the highway bridge on the left was full of tracks, and railroads such as N&W (ex-Wabash), Chicago Great Western, Rock Island, MILW and Des Moines Union could be found here. I used to live just a few blocks from the CGW/CNW main here. Now, of course, I just ruined this spot for the Google Earth Contest, but oh well........
Right at the crossing just west of that yard you see, on the IAIS main, which goes left to right. Not sure which direction the trains were traveling.
