I've been using Rhino 3D v4 since around 2007/2008. All of my 3D modelling was learned on that software and it's served me well. However I've been finding it difficult to do certain operations that I felt newer software could accomplish much easier. I've been so satisfied with Rhino I'm happy to give them more money for this necessary upgrade however I couldn't afford the normal license upgrade cost (around 600 dollars) but saw it was on sale the other day for 399 so I pulled the trigger. Among the enhancements from my 15 year old version is the rendering is so much better. I've been distracted by playing around with the rendering feature instead of modelling... :ROFLMAO: So from version 4 to version 8:

I'll be playing around with new features to see how well it improves my workflow but so far I'm pretty happy with the decision.

    Cheers -Mike

    Beautiful and nice work (y).

Never heard of Rhino before but looks like it is really good. I use the free version of Fusion 360 but if for some reason that went away I'm hooked enough now that I'd buy it (hope that doesn't happen). Then would probably try and figure out a way to pay for it but don't want to go down that road. Also wouldn't want to learn something different at this point either.

I was trained on AutoCad, so I went to TinkerCad (free). Does everything I need with precision down to about 10-15 micrometers. Printing at 20 or 30um slices makes nice smooth surfaces and good detail without taking a whole day for a print.

More fun - still learning the renderer, trying a splash of paint on some of my n-scale creations:

No U28B in the stable currently. The CSX unit is a U18B, then of course the auto-train U36B. I do have two other u-boat models not pictured here, a U30B ph1 and U33B. May post some paint schemes on those units after the holiday activities slow down and life returns to "normal" :)

There is an article in our local newspaper about a local man that started his own business with 3 printers. He has a site on Etsy limitless3ddesign.com or could go to limitless3d-design.etsy.com. Randy used to be a civil engineer but after making some parts for others he started his own business.
There is no mention of him being into model trains

My second-gen GE spotting knowledge is nil. It didn't help that they didn't sell too many, either.

Right there with you. The U18B, U30B and U33B I built on commission so I learned their features as I built them. In fact I didn't even know about the baby-boat before that but now I think it's the coolest. I do fine with identifying EMD up until around 1980 then they all start looking alike to me - especially since the 90s imo. I did an SD70ACU kit so I do know what those look like...lol
