Norfolk Southern has been upgrading its fleet of SD40-2's with various improvements... including new cabs (in some cases, going from High nose to Low nose), short hood forward, cab A/C, and electronic parking brakes....

They don't look like CSX's, anyway: the new cab looks pretty much like an old EMD lownose cab.

Yes, the cabs appear to be clones of the factory EMD cabs. I saw a picture of Altoona shops and they had a bunch of cabs lined up on the ground.

Just goes to show, even after 40 yrs on the rails you can't kill a SD40-2. I just wonder how much duct tape was actually painted over instead of repairing the rust holes.

I saw on the Altoonaworks website that NS has a new cab for the SD40-2's... it has a slanted windshield and protruding numberboards...

I can't see any advantage to the w/s slanted that way.

The first time I assembled a Cannon & Co. EMD thinwall cab, it looked just like that.

Supposedly it is to reduce glare off the low hood....
