OK, so let’s hear some techniques for successfully and most of all quickly uploading photos to Railimages.com.

It just took me an hour to upload 7 simple and small JPG photos. Average was about 9 minutes per photo and 3 tries per photo to achieve one successful upload. Railimages.com has slots for 10 photos to be uploaded at once; I have never been able to upload more than one at a time.

    Suggestions?

Do you have dial-up?? Cause if it takes that long then it sounds like you may have dial-up.

Try uploading 1 or 2 at a time instead of a whole bunch. For me around 3 seems to be the limit at one time before it faults out.

Are you uploading 640x480, or larger?

Trainboard and RailImages software was upgraded Sept 22 and 26th. One big reason was neary EVERYone was uploading megapixel, 10 megabyte images that are 3072x2304 when you only need 1024x768 or less, commonly <<0.5 Megabytes. Many of you don't know about this or, know how to resize before uploading.
Just on this Z forum uploads are likely 100/week. Combine that with all the other forums and the Trainboard/RailImages servers get full in a hurry.

To help this, one of the software upgrades is that you are now limited to only uploading a 640x480 images. Uploads larger than this will take time as they will have to be resized by RailImages. Uploading a 640x480 will obviously be faster.

You can still post a large size image by linking to an external site such as your personal Photos site (e.g. Flicker, etc.) or website.

Additionally, Quoting the post with an image that was just in the last post (or 2, 3 or 7) in the thread takes up additional memory. Please use just the Quick Reply. If you must quote, please delete the picture to help conserve space.

Yes filesize is a big bottleneck. Many people use the free Irfanview viewer to shrink their pictures to 640 x 480 before uploading. I like to use Corel PaintShopPro to shrink my photos. I just bought version XI off ebay for $40 shipped, which should be here this week to upgrade my version 7 for the new computer. The only reason I don't use Irfranview is because I hate the red icons! :D

I normally use Photo Explosion but since I got my new camera and when I try to resize images it makes it blurry by the time I get to the size the I need. So now im using a program called PhotoMVP

I didn't even realize the size was 640, I have been sizing everything to 800. Will do 640 from now on. I use a free program called XnVeiw to re-size, crop, and touch up photos.

But a bunch of different programs can do it.

Thanks for the advice guys. Still troubling since most of my JPGs are 640 x 480, some are 640 x 853 - is 640 x 480 and 640 x 853 still too large?

I have high-speed DSL so its not a dial-up issue.

I haven't had time to review this whole thing yet but the original pixel size of the photo is no issue. It does have to be less than 2 megabytes in file size though.

Some combined uploads of over 2 megs will also fail. This is something I hope to have a remedy for in the future.

Thanks for the info Charlie. My 3072 x 2304 files were 1.18MB but ended up as 640x480 in my folders after upload. So not sure what's going on as they are under the 2MB limit.

My normal 1024x768 uploads have been resized prior to upload and went fine for the past few years. I don't upload the huge images as I just want a max of 1024 for most people. This one last time I posted a one time big image after the software upgrade and I get hosed.

Will try again later and with a series of different file, image and jpeg compression to see the results.

It's not how much money we contribute, is it ? :)

    No, not at all.

All images are resized by the software to a maximum of 640 wide, regardless of the size when you upload.

However, an image over 2 megabytes will be rejected by the system as the php default is 2 megs for a file upload.
