Does anyone know whether NP class W-3 Mikados were re-badged for SP&S service, and, if so, what class they were labeled? Thanks, Adam
I know SP&S had 2-8-2s classed O-1 through O-4, I just don't know how they matched up (or didn't match up) to NP's Mikados.
I found this roster. It appears that O-1 and O-4 class were ex-GN, and classes O-2 and O-3 were ex-NP, I just don't know what the rough equivalence is, e.g., SP&S Class O-3 is basically the same as NP class (fill in the blank).
Okay, I don't know why this always seems to happen, but within minutes of throwing up my arms on my search and posting the initial post I come up with all this information suddenly. Here's something else I just found, indicating that SP&S 539 (O-3 class 2-8-2) was an ex-NP W-3 class. Ding ding ding! If anyone knows of some information on NP W-3 (SP&S O-3) locomotives I would still love to see it. References to articles in magazines or chapters of books are also welcome.
Seems to me they got some oil burners from NP. I'm at work now, but that the kind of info I would look in the NP Supersteam Era book to verify. Also the NP Tell Tale yahoo list has guys siting around waiting for such a question.
I found some links to photos of SP&S 539, which is ex-NP 1762 (W-3 class)... in Arizona? SPS 539 SPS 539 SPS 539
539 is a shame. The new owners of the Grand Canyon realized how expensive steam is, fired the steam team and claimed to be green and run only deisels....how can a railroad be green and run an Alco?
Ohhh, it was this locomotive. Can we have her back, then? Is this thing just sitting there getting sandblasted in the hot sun? What a waste. That thing belongs back in the Pacific Northwest where people actually care about the SP&S. You can be green and run an Alco if you burn nothing but fairy dust, or if you park it.
P.S. No offense intended toward the SW or Arizona in general, though I do stand by all barbs sent in Grand Canyon Railroad's general direction.
I live near Phoenix, and I am not happy with the Grand Canyon's direction....they run "steam specials" using vegitable oil....
