A thread was started on Trainorders warning that some photos existed on personal photo albums at webshots.com that belonged to other photographers without crediting the photo's rightful owner. As a web site owner myself, this alarms me greatly. While I only offer my photography for the enjoyment of others and do so without expectation of any form of profit, I do expect that those who use them will not repost them as their own or otherwise use them without giving credit to me or my web site.

Below is a link to the section of Webshots which includes Train photos. You may want to browse through (there are over 13,000 photos) to see if any photos from your web sites have been used without your knowlege. Also, if you notice any photos that you know were taken from someone else's web site, you can drop them a note pointing to the location of the photo so they can determine the best action.

Like the Widow Creek issue noted by me on the UP board, these situations would be avoided completely if people would just request proper permission and apply proper credit when using the work of others. Unfortunately, too many people these days are just lazy, and the internet seems to magnify their own lack of originality and creativity. It is just easier to download the work of others, and recycle it as their own.

I apologize if my position on this issue comes off as a tyrade, but I'm sure that most of you who spend hours designing, photographing and scanning material for your own web sites will probably agree with my concerns.

    Thanks for the warning, Kevin.
I totally agree with your view on this subject, having a photo site as well.
I make note on each thumbnail page that any photo may be downloaded for personal use only and for any other they are to contact me for reason your state in your 5th paragraph.

    Gary.

It seems to be an increasing problem...

But you can put all the warnings on your page you want.. They are stealing the images anyway...Do you think they would listen to a message saying dont use without permission??

What about a watermark on the photos.. It doesnt have to be something large adn ruin the image, it could be something that shows its yours, and sometimes they can add to the image..??
