I've started weathering my HO rolling stock and I'm not sure if I'm on the right track. I've got diesels covered, but not sure if these are turning out the way I want them to so I'm looking for a sanity check. I'm using everything from airbrushing to acrylic washes to straight chalks. Most times it's a combination of all three. The one area I haven't gone yet is the use of the fantastic finishes for rust. I used it effectively in N Scale, just need to figure out when or where the right spots on the big brother. So here's my first posting of these (other then to my website). Please critique away, I've got my big boy pants on today... Just no comments on the graffiti. It's a personal choice and a fact of life in the modern RR world (right, wrong, or otherwise...)
Thanks guys. I appreciate the feedback! Only regret is I didn't fade the BN cars lettering enough. Still looks to crisp for an "older" car. I have a Great Northern car that is going to get the full treatment and this will be the first rust bucket that I'm going to attempt. Brian
Pretty darned nice work. although it's easy for you to see the flaws, I doubt anyone would notice any problems if the cars were all in a train together. I don't see any problems and I expect you'll just get better and better with your skill.
Looks very prototypical to me, doesn't matter if there is graffiti on there or not, I usually custom graffiti my cars. But in my view looks great!
Pretty good looking. One place people often miss is the ends, can't tell from your photos. Usually the ends have a vertical dirt splatter from the wheels. Maybe add yellow reflective safety stripes along the sides of your cars. Overall, I like it! Greg Amer The Industrial Lead gregamer.com
Looks great Brian! Weathering is something I've never been able to accomplish to my own satisfaction, which makes it very difficult to keep trying to do. What's "fantastic finishes for rust"? I tried Googling it and only came up with auto-body repair shops and bathtub refinishing outfits... Bill in FtL
Hi Bill, Sorry about that, I keep forgetting the real name and call it Fantastic Finishes all the time. Should be Sophisticated Finishes Rust Antiquing set. I had my Mom buy it at a local Michael's Craft Store and mail it to me since they don't have an online purchase capability that I could find. Can't find it in Europe either. http://www.modernoptions.com/ Here's an example of what you can do with it (these are some of the N Scale cars I've done). Thanks, Brian
Thanks Greg and good point. The ends are done and have the vertical streaks as you mentioned. Made it heavier on the hopper cars because of the open access to the wheels. Not as much on the boxcars, but it's there. The undercarriages are filthy as well... I do need to start adding the safety stripes as time permits. Thanks, Brian
Wow - that is some great looking rust! I'm going to have to give that stuff a try. Good looking weathering all around on those too.
I agree, aluminum shouldn't rust, but are these aluminum doors or steel doors with silver paint? I don't know enough about the composition of cars to make an informed decision, so went off photos I had seen, such as these below. http://www.krunk.org/~joeshaw/pics/milw/86ftbox/milw4771.jpg http://www.krunk.org/~joeshaw/pics/milw/86ftbox/milw4766-1-medium.jpg Brian

Hi Mark, Thanks! We are still in Germany for another 18 months. I've been swamped with work and painting. Still doing N Scale though, just branched out to HO. Actually, I switched scales for my own stuff. Lot's of new stuff is posted on the website. Just drop me a line when you're ready. Brian
