Just completed large A&P warehouse/regional distribution center, kitbashed from a Walthers J.R.Frost Cold Storage building. A careful look through the loading dock doors apparently reveals aisle after aisle of stock racks inside the illuminated interior. This will be the largest shipper/receiver on my layout.

    Hi, all,

I've been traveling a ton on business lately, so no time to be at home and model

I did, last week, able to visit narrow gauge (750mm) German live steam railroad - using 2-10-2T's manufactured in the former East Germany in 1954.... they still run every day of the year, for tourists and railfans, but also for locals to use as transport. The particular one I visited is near Dresden, Germany, called the "Lobnitzgrundbahn".

You can find out more info on Google using search word: " Loessnitzgrundbahn "
Or use Google to translate this web site: http://www.loessnitzgrundbahn.de/

Here's a couple shots. Yes, this is May 6, 2008! The track looks just like full-scale
N scale track (i.e. really heavy rail, despite the narrow gauge):

Here's a few other URLs from other folks of photos of these narrow gauge
    East German live steam railways:

Another view of 2-10-2T 99.1771-7 at Hammerunterwiesenthal on 18 August 1978. These locos were built for the narrower guage 750 mm. lines in Saxony, and are rather smaller than the giants which operate the metre gauge Harzquerbahn further north. :: DR_Fichtelberg_99-1771-7b_18-8-78.jpg :: Fotopic.Net

Dresden itself is an incredible story... the rebuilding and progress in the past 8 years is
amazing.. the area around Dresden is now known as "Silicon Saxony".... 63 years after the
war here, it was a time for me of deep reflection on the profound lessons of history, and
to see reconstruction and reconcilation in the human spirit of all peoples.

Enjoy, and Thank You for those of you that gave suggestions that lead to me
finding and enjoying my day with German narrow gauge live steam.

An ill fated trip to the Zoo this weekend turned into a much better event. Fortunately the Cincinnati Zoo entrance was backed up around the block with people so we decided to head to Cincinnati Museum Center in Union Terminal.

I snapped a few shots out side:

We then went in and were just in time for a tour of the facility. I have known about this tour before but our timing was never right before to catch it. It is well worth it. The tour is free and get's you a behind the scenes look at many places not open to the public. The most impressive is walking across the ballcony looking down over the concourse:

The rest of the tour included the restored presidents office, board room, recieption room and waiting room. Also included are what were the mens and womens lounges. The Men's lounge is now the Amtrak station. The lunchroom and women's lounge are now reception halls for weddings and events. I will need to dump the pictures from my wifes camera for the remainder, I was too busy maintaining control of my son when we went into the off limits areas.

The remainder of our day was spent in Tower A. It is the old switch tower for the passenger yard. The tower now overlooks Queensgate yard. There is plenty of NS and CSX traffic on the move to keep you busy for a while. We finally had to drag my 3 year old out kicking and screaming because he didn't want to leave. While in tower, which I have been in at least a dozen times, I noticed something that I had not seen before....

This should hopefully get be back into the swing of finishing the Cincinnatian loco that I am working on.

Also while there I picked up a 1971 copy of "Railroading" for $1. It had a nice article on the Buffalo Creek and Gauley 2-8-0 #4 and an interesting letter written by one of the founders of the B&O. I couldn't pass that up for a buck.

    How 'bout Weekend Video Fun.....

We've mostly been readers but now we feel we have accomplished enough to show it off so here's the debut of our layout. Check out the youtube link. Constructive criticism always appreciated - Dave

Toddlers are great, right!;) Mine does that too, which is why he goes on my shoulders. Sometimes, though, that desn't even work.

P&L is fairly nocturnal in terms of their freight. However, if you visit Paducah during the day you'll most likely see 2-3 UP unit coal trains, 1-2 BNSF trains, CN's "Fulton turn", and P&L switching the yard. As well as movements in and out of VMV's Paducah Shops.

He's not really bad, it is just that he knew after the tour we were heading up to Tower A and he would get to watch trains. Patience is not a word he has accepted the meaning of yet. While standing in the Board Room, we did get to watch a CSX Autorack train roll by just outside the window. That satisfied him for a short while.

I'm a big fan of how people do building interiors. Can we get a close-up? How did you get the effect?

The A&P is also one of my favorites. It brings back memories of my childhood:

I put an interior in my A&P, too. It's a City Classics model, by the way.

Count me in among those old A&P shoppers. Actually, Mom was the A&P shopper, I was just along for the ride.

Oh, yeah, we saved S&H green stamps too.

    Nice interior, by the way.

Here's about the best I can do simply enlarging my original shot to show the warehouse interior. It includes three dimensional packing cases, etc. in the foreground placed on a 1.5" deep interior floor/shelf and a backdrop of long aisles, stock racks and shelving I printed out from images of real commercial shelving and warehouse interiors I located on the Web. The interior is illuminated using a passenger car lighting fixture.

    NYW&B:

Any chance of seeing a track plan of your railroad ?

I have admired your work and the photos you have shared here. A copy of the track plan and the layout would help put it in perspective.

    Thanks,

    Barry

Quite honestly, Barry, I've never drawn up a postable trackplan for the layout and it's simply not my style to post a pencil drawing of the layout...such wouldn't convey what its intent is all about anyway.

Give me a little time to come up with something a bit more formal. When I have such ready, I'll post it somewhere on this forum.

    NYW&B,

I love that warehouse scene. When I was a teenager, working in a grocery store, I sometimes had to drive the manager's truck down to one of those places to make purchases that the store might have ran short on. You made that scene "belieavable!" ...and isn't that one of the things we're after?
