Photos from a trip I recently took to Bob Foltz layout (cover layout, June 2011 Model Railroader) 3700 series Northern on the head of a passenger train. Glorieta station. Uhhhhhh, I think that was just a tad bit too far there mack....... Santa Fe GFE (green fruit express) train winding through the same curves as the MRR June article.
It's fun taking pictures with a new engine. Train 56, 2nd section on the way to Fiddletown. Wolfgang
Ran some H0 scale trains at the club today. Cotton Belt GP30 passes an East Texas Piney Woods rural crossing. Bill Eubanks modeled the scene.
Wolfgang, Look, if you make me go back to HOn3, we gonna have problems LOL . HOn3 has come a LONG way since the late 70's when I was into it. Couldn't afford those 1,000 dollar brass locos then. Blackstone is really making this scale a lot more viable to us with a smaller budget. As usual Wolfgang , great shot!!.....Mike
That is some beautiful scenery, vistas, views, etc.! Really a nice job on that layout.:thumbs_up:
I was looking at your close up on the hinged section. How long have you been using this layout. How does it hold up to opening and closing. I assume your layout is in N scale. Looks fun by the way; it's very tracky. In looking at your picture I can see what Russel was talking about, the center of the hinge. Can't think of the word for middle of a circle right now... Anyway, that middle point that everything rotates around has to be higher than the top of the rail. I may have to change things since my hinges are very small and may not be taller than the rail at the middle point.
Only had the "benchwork" done about 3 months. I was / am worried about the MDF powdering around the screws over time. I dropped some thick CA into the holes & let it soak for a bit before driving in the screws, so I'm hoping that helps. The pivot does need to be above boards. How much depends on how high you need to clear the track. You can use hinges with raised pivots, raise the hinge itself (like Russell suggested), or you can keep an inch or two on each side of the gap clear of track & drop in a connector piece (much like NTrak / modular club standards). Or, if you don't want to worry about the hinges, just create a drop-in section that locks with slide bolts. Have fun!
