Here we go with this weekends Proto Fun! Hope everyone is doing well. As I was getting out of my truck when I returned to the office from lunch yesterday, I heard a horn. You know of course that is the call of the wild to any railfan. Gambling it was a southbound and knowing I didn't have anything pressing, I hopped back in and drove around behind the building. Only had to wait a couple of minutes for the southbound to appear. It was set up in what I have been seeing referred to as a 1+1 configuration, that's one unit on the point and one mid train. There were also a couple of cool MOW flats in the train as well. I'll stop rambling now, show the pics and wish you all a great weekend! CSX 706 CSX 3024 CSXT 920750 C&O 920637 CSXT 920810
A late 192 arrives in Columbia, SC, a heavy manifest up from Macon, GA [01/27/2022]. He'd slowed for the yard approach and was working hard. The sound was great, the sort of thing you feel as much as hear.
I never seem to pass by here when the sun is at a decent angle. Toppenish, Simcoe & Western RR MRS1 #B-2070, sits and waits, and waits. She has been parked at Royal City, Washington for many long years now. Will she ever move again, under her own power?
At about 4:30 this blustery February afternoon, an eastbound NS freight is about to cross Derry RD and knock down the MP 98 signals. In the background loom the preserved stacks on the site of what was once Hershey Chocolate's premier factory.
Spotted this in New Town, ND on 5 Feb while driving home from Minot. I suppose it's some specialty 'green' thing. Neat though.

Bizarre creature.... I had no intention of chasing this train (howling wind and crummy skies, not even blowing snow), but while waiting at Minot East on the CP Portal Sub, a white CP pickup with a crew approached. They stopped along side me, rolled down the driver's window (me, expecting to get thrown out), and I recognize the driver--a friend of mine named Kelby. The train was CP 198, the eastbound counterpart to the hottest train on the Portal Sub, getting a fresh crew in Minot (instead of Enderlin, from Portal; about 2 hours away by car), probably a bit behind schedule. I headed east for a shot, and crouched low against a codeline pole. The 198 blasted by minutes later. I usually miss shooting the few waves I get, but not this time!
The MRS1 was there about 1998 when I was on the crew widening Rd 12 north of Royal City. It looked like it had been there awhile then.
Can't recall when it first showed up, but you are correct. By then it had been sitting there for some years.
The U.S. military must have owned a bunch of MRS-1s and when sold they ended up just about everywhere. Chattanooga, TN [08/25/1990]
DQOTD (dumb question of the day): were any other builders offering an alternative model when the MRS-1 was selected? Military contracts usually require multiple bids, for competition reasons.
There are two of these at the Northwest Railway Museum: https://www.trainmuseum.org/index.php/large-artifact-collection
Even Davenport got into the game with similar end-cab jobs like the RS-4-TC. They had standard gauge, standard adjustable to broad gauge, and even narrow gauge (one was famous for running on the Rio Grande's narrow gauge lines).
