This week I had an overnight work meeting in San Francisco and wisely decided to take the train from Roseville. A wise choice it was as it was truly multimodal. Bus, Train, Ferry and Walking.

Plus, in addition to getting to relax instead of fight traffic, I also caught what I presume to be the San Jose Turn in Jack London Sq. Oakland.

2 SD60Ms, UP9900 and SD59MX with the diesel particulate filter and a GP40-2 for good measure.

My Capital Corridor train passed it after we'd left the Martinez bridge and went through Benicia.

Quite an interesting mix of power. Could almost be considered "retro" these days.

Is the gray on that lead unit really as sun bleached as it appears to be?

Here are the ex-NS SD40-2's that CSX got in a trade. They keep them black, with CSX emblems. Just out of paint shop, sitting at testing track. This at CSX Shops at Huntington,WV.

One of the Silver Fern cars that Dunedin Railway runs up the Pacific coast along the cliffs. Supposed to be a spectacular trip but I will have to go back and do that one later.

Yes, the SD60Ms could stand a trip through the paint booth. This one at least doesn't have extensive rust and primer showing through. The 3 window SD60Ms and Spartan SD60s are not getting upgraded as of now. They work with the SD59s on turns and bigger locals throughout Ca.

Is it just the photo angle, or does this look ninety feet long? Probably about sixty feet in reality?

Probably somewhere around 75 feet. The gauge is 3 foot 6 inches so kind of narrow gauge. The "loading gauge" or clearance profile is adjusted accordingly so it makes the cars look longer.

CSX gives us a nice example of making a patch job on an engine - no worries if the paint on your models is patchy... that's prototype!:teeth:

That Dunedin car does look long - narrow gauge and their loading gauge make them look longer because they're thinner. A similar length car for a North American railroad would be noticeably wider and higher. As I've mentioned in another thread, I've seen the EMD London assembly lines, and there were SD70ACe's next to a European passenger loco, and our stuff makes theirs look like toys.

Hmmm. Well, after looking at the photos offered, I like this scheme. Now, if they'd add some NKP style visibility stripes on nose and tail....
