UP must have picked up the lease on a number of those red HLCX units. I saw at least two of them in Hearne, Texas yesterday. Sure stand out against the grimy UP locomotives.
Nope. Both MKT and MoPac (IGN) went through. UP was downs to the Mop track for a while but rebuilt the Katy putting down new track on the "abandoned" right of way that they still owned. Much protestations from the local residents but there was nothing they could do about it.
IGN. OK. Now I recall. I need to put up a page of my IGN train orders... So both tracks are in and used today? Amazing what assumptions the public makes about railroads. Let rails even become somewhat rusted and they automatically go to "abandoned". Never mind infrequent use, or legally just out of service.
Yes, most the southbound traffic uses the old MoPac and northbound uses the Katy. That includes the Amtrak Texas Eagle seen here entering New Braunfels north bound on the old MKT.
