We see ex-AT&SF power passing through here every day. Even a unit now and then is used for helper service, on the transcontinental main. But only rarely is a there one kept around for local and switching work.
Got lucky on Wednesday catching two freights while on my route. First up is CSX D795, Hanover, PA to Hagerstown, MD on the ex WM Dutch Line. #5252 is seen here at Highfield, PA just as it crests Jacks Mountain and begins its descent. And second, it's either Q016, or Q116 , Chicago, Ill to Chambersburg, PA. After just crossing the Mason Dixon line, #718 eases past an old grain elevator.
during my time in Beaverton Or, it was not at all rare to see Ex ATSF units in Yard service. Certainly GP39M and BN GP38s were more prevalent, but Cub Scouts were a regular occurrence.
I find it pretty interesting that when Milwaukee took over the Fort Dodge Line that they kept all these depots with pillars. There were several on the line. Adel, Panora, Yale, and now I find Jeffersons. ( All in Iowa by the way) Clive to Ft Dodge.... Sent from my Commando
Looks like a standard MILW Porte Cochere design from here. I'm confused by mention of how they "took over." All those station names you list go way back to turn of the century MILW, and earlier.
The little railroad got started in 1875. Changed names buddy times but became part of the Milwaukee's route. Original names.. Des Moines Adel & Western Railroad. 1875-1880. Then the Des Moines and North Western Railway. 1880-1888. Des Moines &Northwestern Railway. 1888-1891. Des Moines, Northern and Western Railway. 1891- 1895. Finally! Des Moines Northern and Western Railroad, 1895-1899. I am not sure why there is a difference between railroad and railway, but apparently there is at tax time. ?. I have no idea...
