Some antiques on a hill side south of Dallas, Texas. An SLSF caboose and what is probably an old CRIP day coach.

Stuffed and mounted. But not recycled into an import car! Milwaukee Road Little Joe E70, Deer Lodge, Montana:

The Little Joes were gorgeous locomotives. Interesting to note that when GE designed the body of the Little Joe 4-D+D-4 in 1947-ish, they based it on the body design of the New Haven 4-C+C-4 EP-4 developed 10 years earlier, stretching the body to accommodate the D trucks. BTW, the EP-4 used the same frame and power as the GG-1.

I wonder if the NH version body is actually the same length as a Little Joe? The Joes were stretched when they added those two drive axles, pushing the pilot out from underneath the body. Also note the nose shape. They sloped those areas forward of Little Joe windows, to gain visibility. This is one thing where the Russians had some foresight.

That's an interesting point, Ken. The basic LJ body shell might be the same as the EP-4, with only the frame lengthened to accommodate the D trucks. I'll see if I can find some dimensions for the EP-4 to compare with LJ dimensions you posted.

EDIT - Maybe this will answer our questions....

    Hank,

Actually the frame itself isn't lengthened. There is a "floating", (better word?), pilot deck which extends out, with a bolster for the pilot trucks. The car body itself rides upon those two powered trucks, under each cab. Look at this photo. You can see the clearance below the car body, over the pilot deck. The pilot couples to the drive truck, which the two driven trucks are coupled. (By coupled, I mean a permanent type drawbar.) The train pull is through the trucks, having nothing to do with car body:

Ken, the specification drawing you posted on the N-Scale forum doesn't have a dimension for the cab length. However I estimate the LJ cab to be about the same length as the EP-4 by subtracting the distances between the couplers and the first pilot axles from the overall length, then subtracting 2-3 more feet because it looks like the pilot axles are a little beyond the front of the body. So both bodies end up being 74', if you allow me a little wiggle room.

BTW, I was thinking the Whyte system when I said 4-D+D-4. I had forgotten that most, if not all electrics were classified by axles, not wheels...oops.

Neither of these two are stuffed and mounted. SP&S 700 being shoved (hot) into the Oregon Rail Heritage Center on Thursday evening, all checked out and ready to run three days of Holiday Express trains in Portland. SP 4449 inactive as she is going through the FRA 1472 day inspection. She WILL run again. I am so lucky to live so close to these two great engines and can participate in their outings.

Ken, it was one of Dick Samuels engines and I didn't see which one it was. I know over at the old Brooklyn roundhouse Doyle used the Nickel Plate Alco RS-something, and it is on the premises.
