Almost no small elevators are served by class 1s anymore. Unfortunate, but RRs seem to only want to serve unit train shuttle loaders. I don't know for sure, but the elevator didn't seem to be very active.
No possible cause has yet been published, although my suspicion is on a cold weather cause, as it was around -20°F that morning.

Spoke with a friend yesterday, who's adult child works out of Minot for BNSF. A broken wheel caused the derail. Happily, it hadn't made it to the trestle when it ran aground.

Sitting in the office at the Sebring (Ohio) Model Railroad Club on Sunday, there were trains almost every ten to fifteen minutes. I managed to catch a couple of eastbound trains bound for Pittsburgh. [IMG][IMG][IMG]

I also climbed up on our desk to get a good shot of this control diagram for the intersection in Alliance. It isn't just a drawing but may have been from a control panel in a long removed switch tower.

Wow, that is really cool! I suspect that your club's model board is the real deal, revisions with Dymo tape labels and all. This was the model board in the EJ&E's Barrington, IL tower where their line crossed the C&NW. I shot this in May 1976. The boxes on the model board are marked "Manipulation" and gave the "Op" exact instruction on which levers to pull to line up various routes. The four glass globes contain timing clocks. These were used to assure that if an Op decided to take a route down and set up a new one, he'd be prevented from doing so until he'd "run time" on the clocks. This prevented a route from being changed as a train approached the plant. Barrington Tower closed in May 2003 and was demolished August 2006.
