Were there any WM cabooses (cabeese sp?) still in service during the CSX era that were not in Chessie paint? I would have asked this in the CSX forum but it doesn't have as much traffic as The Inspection Pit. Thought I would get a quicker answer here.

Cook and Zimmerman's book on the Western Maryland (Fireballs and Black Diamonds) has pictures from the Chessie era with WM cabeese in speed and fireball, although the exact dates are sort of vague. I seem to remember something about Chessie on the web that said a lot of locomotives and rolling stock were never repainted in Chessie. Maybe the question would be how long the WM northeast cabeese were used in the Chessie era. It seems unlikely that they were all repainted.

Short answer is no. There were a couple that survived unmodified (WM1802 comes to mind... wood sashes and end doors lasted through several Chessie safety schemes). Other than a couple of convention repaints, and early retirements, a pall of yellow, vermillion and blue had descended on the active fleet by the late 1970's. You need to consult Dwight Jones' excellent tome on Western Maryland Cabooses for further details.
