Did Western Pacific roster any tank cars? I can't find any pictures. Maybe the 8,000 gallon to 11,000 gallon size. Thanks.
Flash, if my WP books weren't packed, I could say for sure. I know they had some old tank cars they used for MW service to haul water and fuel to equipment and crews. Did you get one of the MT WP tanks cars? I have one myself...it's based on a tank car at the museum in Portola.
Yes, WP did in fact roster tank cars. http://wplives.org/WPRM_Home/Equipment_Roster/Tank_Cars/tank_cars.html WPMW257 was found by member David Epling on a spur, forgotten about by the UP and so we got it. Low and behold, when it came "home" the guys opened the dome and guess what was inside? Fine grade machine oil. Score.
According to Jim Eager's book all WP tank cars were in non-revenue service. They were mostly MOW, water & fuel cars
Thanks, very much. Great info. Good story about the machine oil, too. I have often thought that railroads do misplace cars. A merger would be worse than normal for losing track of cars.
UP may have miss placed it but some of us had been keeping an eye on it for a few yrs. Another car that was in the same area, ACF 70 covered hopper maybe lost now though. It was used for storing sand at Parr yard, haven't driven in lately but it maybe gone now. Hope it wasn't scrapped. Greg
I drove into Parr yard this morning on the way to work. The hopper is gone. There are a couple of people who might know what happened to the car. I fear the worst though, since there was a contractor scrapping freight cars at Sparks yard last week. Greg
Dobbas? I keep in touch with Kelly Franklin pretty regularly there, and I keep an eye and ear out for WP cars going through there.
Tom, It could have been Dobbas doing the scrapping. I didn't get a chance to get close to the work on cutting up the wrecked box cars and they were efficient at it. I couldn't see any signs of scrapping at Parr yard so maybe it was lifted onto a truck. I'd heard rumor that the WP museum was interested in the UP ACF hopper. It could have been set on the tracks and moved to be stored across the yard. Need to go and check out the warehouse side and see if it's still there. Greg
