What is the "gold standard" for N scale couplers? In HO everybody just automatically buys Kadee#5s when they buy a piece of rolling stock. Is there an N scale equivalent? Do y'all body mount or truck mount the couplers? Thanks for the info!
Really depends Rich. With truck mounted couplers, you can navigate tighter radii, but you can push the train right off the track if you're backing up. Most RTR stuff comes with the Rapido-style coupler, which is equivalent to the HO horn-hook coupler. Micro-Trains is the N scale Kadee equivalent, and their #1015 would be equivalent to Kadee's #5s. However, sometimes it is easier to just use truck mounted couplers, especially if you're replacing trucks as well. As for me, I have a combination (all MTs), with the locos all having body-mounts. ------------------ Corey Lynch Pres - Rensselaer Model RR Society NEB&W RR http://www.rpi.edu/~lynchc/Railfanning/railfanning.htm - My Site http://www.union.rpi.edu/railroad/ - NEB&W
Well Microtrains is the N scale equivalent to Kadee actually both are owned by brothers. I use microtrains for all my locomotives and rollingstock and find then to be excellent. ------------------ Regards Paul Cassar-# Member number 50 SPAD Investigator #1 ICQ 61198217 http://users.bigpond.net.au/railroad2000
MICRO-TRAINS COUPLERS is the number one N-Scale coupler on the market. They are the best. When you get all you rolling stock and engines changed over to MICRO-TRAINS, you will be able to operate your railroad right. The best way to mount your MT's is body mount. That way you can push a train backwards with no problem. You can use magnetic, twist sticks, and electro-magnetic uncouplers. It all depends on how and where you want to uncouple. ------------------ Let's Go Run Trains MARK
I use Microtrains couplers on everything. Body-mount on locomotives, and MT trucks/couplers on all rolling stock. Even though all my freightcars have truck mounted couplers, I have no problem pushing long cuts of cars. If your trackwork is good you should have no problems ------------------ Alan The perfect combination - BNSF and N Scale! www.ac-models.com Andersley Western Railroad Alan's American Gallery
