what if there was a notch 10 on all diesel locomotives think of how cracked the roads would be at a crossing on a grade think of how many car allarms would go off and your feet vibrating out from underneath you and how mutch smoke would be pouring out of the Alcos and the older GEs it would be great if all diesel locomotives had a N10

Probably not. The motor would be running so hard the locomotives would suffer severe crankcase failures and literally blow the hatches off of the piston cases. Pushrod bending and binding, generator issues, too obviously. Likely blow out a turbo which could cause problems. I'd think most more modern locomotives would have some kind of electronic "rev limiter" or something to prevent serious damage if something were to go wrong.

Depends on how many RPMs the prime moves turns at a theoretical notch 10.

Now that I think of it....Didn't U25's and/or other early GE units have a 16-notch throttle system?..... In that case a Notch / Run 10 would be like a Notch / Run 5 throttle position.

This reminds me of the first Spinal Tap movie, where they were discussing how a particular amp was so loud it went "to eleven."

Someone asks, well, couldn't you just make ten louder instead of add an 11. The reply is a confused look and a, "but this goes to eleven!"

Yes they did. Modern locos make full power at an extremely low rpm. That is why they usually last 1,000,000 miles before they need a rebuild. I've often wished for a notch 9 while struggling uphill trying to get home in time to see the Colts kickoff!:tb-biggrin:

Maybe we could secretly swap out gearing and re-calibrate the speed recorders...
Can't remember exactly what the "gearheads" used to do - seems like they were changing out the rear ends of their cars for 3:11 rear ends...
And we learned how to disconnect the speedometer/odometer so that "inquiring minds" didn't find out how many miles we logged on the family cruiser - thank goodness there were no speed recorders attached to our wheel hubs...
