In this picture http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=132287 the Geep on the right. #3104, it appears. The bulge on the right side is sloped like on a GP50 or GP60, but I know CP doesn't have either of those. Besides, the dynamic brake section looks older. What is it, some sort of rebuilt GP38?

I never knew that. (That's what comes from looking at models more than the real thing.) Every picture of a GP38-2 I'd seen before this one was either an earlier model or from the other side. Now that you say that, I recall having seen one of these in person and wondering what it was.

    Nice shot! Welcome to Trainboard!!

I knew the last of the GP38-2´s got the new style intake. What other units besides the SD50/60/70 families got that style intake?

Those GP38-2's were built in the mid 1980's around the same time the Gp50/GP60 production was in full swing, body parts were used on the 38-2's that were also used on the GP50's and 60's.

It does look a little rough. Maybe it´s time for a trip to the paint shop. [IMG] Of course, it does make for an interesting catch.

The July '05 CTC Board mag. has a pic of one of those GP35's brand new in it! I was just cruising thru it and saw it!

EMD engines built after 1983 have the new angled traction motor blower housing...

Ontario Northland also has several GP38-2's with the angled blower, and there are a couple more regional roads that have them too.

Same thing with the GP40-2... Some newer Florida East Coast GP40-2s has those.

GP50s built before 1983 has the regular blower housing (like the ones owned by CNW)... Burlington Northern had a mix of GP50s with both the original blower housing and the newer angled type.

For my own freelanced HO layout, I got angled-blower GP38-2's. :D

Any EMD built after 1981 has the newer duct... with the exception of N&W/NS SD50S, which as built had the beaded blower duct, but in 11/81 were retrofitted by EMD with the newer duct.

Hmm... I could have sworn I saw some GP38-2s built in 1983 for Canadian Pacific still sporting the beaded blower bumps.

I should have been more specific...

Those were GMDD built... order #C445 (CP 3021-3040) blt 03 to 06/83. They do use the older blower duct... much older...

GMDD never used the beaded blower duct

These were the last GMDDs to use the older blower duct.

Interestingly enough, CP also had an SD40-2 order built before and during the GP38-2 order by GMDD, C444-1 (CP 6037-6054) blt 12/82 to 08/83, and these all used the angular duct.
