I photographed several weeks ago a California & Northern engine that looks like in my estimation the same paint scheme as the Arizona and Californian. What is up with that? The Arizona and Californian photo was copied from Harold R.(aka SD75Mac) railimage gallery. Any answers?
Somebody said that asking questions, should not be consider stupid. Well folks I feel stupid by this last respond (sp). Now can somebody give me an intelligent answer.
Both railroads are owned by the same holding company, which is the reason they are painted, but lettered differently. This is a new trend coming from some of the larger shortline companys. OmniTrax, RailAmerica, G&W are all companys that own several different railroads yet have matching paint jobs with different lettering for each railroad. At times, power short railroads are send units from a sister railroad, and this keeps everything looking the same, and keeps a good company image. Hope that helps!
There are no stupid questions, only inquisative idiots. Just kidding caldog. Yeah, the answer's been given, but to reiterate, they're the same company, different railroads. Saves money and offers corporate unity to paint them all the same.
Is the California Northern still operating, and if so, where? They used to operate on the old Northwestern Pacific ROW from Marin to Eureka, but the last time I saw a train on those tracks was about 10 years ago.
Just happened to be looking at Railpictures and saw this...another ACR railroad, Puget Sound and Pacific http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=150284
It was a good question!!!!!!! Nothing wrong with the question and I don't think Dan ment any harm in his responce given the 's. I didn't know they were owned by the same holding company either. So, I for one am glad the question was asked.
Kind of like what Chessie did, same scheme or in that case, colors from all three railroads, B&O, C&O and WM under one paint scheme but with different reporting marks. I too always thought the C&N paint was really nice!
That is one color scheme that looks like it belongs to a railroad, not a trucking company "knock-off" like some major railroads, think I'll just "duck down" now and go take my meds.
Cal Northern does still exist. I didn't think they operated the NWP, but I admit that I'm really late to the game on that railsystem. So don't listen to me. Currently they operate in the north bay area, Napa and Sonoma.
Caldog, Sorry, that you took my reply as flippant, it wasn't meant that way. I do have a tendency to be facetious and sometimes that tends to bite me in the stern. Dan
Dan, Thanks for the clarification. What I really wanted to know who is the company that owns these roads. I kinda figured that they were own by the same company. I apologize if my initial question wasn't clear enough, that is my fault. Steve
Steve, The Arizona & California and the California Northern are both part of Rail America's, North American Rail Group. http://www.railamerica.com/index.html Dan
Thanks Dan for the link. Very Informative. Driving down to Fresno this afternoon to watch my local team [Stockton Lightning-Arena Football League 2] play the Fresno club, will now have to leave a earlier then planned so I can stop by the Fresno yards to see if I can see any engines from their San Joaquin Valley Railroad road, that runs through Fresno.
I don't believe they've been involved in past NWP operations. But if ever there is a re-start of NWP, I'd think they might be a logical operator. Boxcab E50
I believe all three roads, Arizona & California, California Northern and Puget Sound & Pacific were originally owned by PARC. This is where the same paint scheme originated. They used to have a website featuring all three roads. I'm not sure when it happended but Cal Northern and ARZC are now part of RailAmerica hence the new numbering schemes for the latest aquired units and such. Cal Northern is doin good AFAIK. They run from Napa Jct to Vallejo and over to the Budwieser plant at Suisuin City/Fairfield. Also the run the old West Valley line from Davis to Woodland and further north. They have one more line further south too but not sure which one. For a bunch of pics check out my roster at California Northern Roster or check out The Unoffical California Northern Site by fellow Trainboarder Dave Epling.
At one point when they first started up, Cal Northern did indeed interchange with the NWP at Schellville. Unforutunately we all know how the NWP thing is goin.
