I have searched on this and other forums but have I've not been able to find a topic on train lengths so here is one now. If you answer it would be nice to know a little more info about your layouts if you could put it in a post. Also, if you have your layout on the net could you put a link to your layout if you haven’t already put one in your profile. Looking for Average train length Mainline length Layout square footage Era Locale Number of engines Number of cars Number of operators Min curve radius Min turnout Height Thanks Lucas Barnlund Sitka, Alaska

I totally missed that one. Mods please delete this. [ April 09, 2006, 12:28 AM: Message edited by: Lucas in Alaska ]
**drats, I took far to long with my reply! well, i voted and should probably say something I have no specific era to model, however, at the moment I am particuarly interested in Intermodal... My trains vary greatly depending on what I feel like running, it could be a car or two, or it could be twenty five, (my 2.5X6 foot table wont allow more than that) One of my more favored trains to run is the fifteen Deluxe Innovations RoadRailers I have, inculding the N Scale Collector Vineyards of Virginia collection. My table is in a spare room, (yes I am the youngest and still living at home) I have two main lines, one that runs the outer part of the table and an inner line that runs in a figure eight with a trestle across the middle. i have a minimum radius of about ten inches andt he height of my tunnels were built to be enough for my tallest car, BARELY, I'm paying for it now since I cannot run my precious DI Maxi-stacks Unfortunately, it doesnt look like I have any overall pics of my table on railimages, (http://www.railimages.com/gallery/peternute) I should work on that. Anyways, I have twenty locomotives, three of which are in a million peices awaiting whatever repair and 110 assorted rolling stock with five passenger cars. About thirty of my car roster has been given to me by my dad and is very old stuff, the rest i have spent far too much on in the past three years... -NUTEY-
I have a single mainline of about 12 ft (well, actually it is a branchline between two not-modelled mainlines). I have 2 sets of FA/B's, but cannot run them: too large, no turning table, and they are analog..... Also RS1 and RS3, not digital either. I can only run a U25B, a FM roadswitcher and a RDC, but I have plans to let someone build a decoder in my RS1. My trains are no longer than max 5 cars. This is OK, because it is a branchline with a few industries. I have about 25 cars, mostly boxcars. It is situated in Connecticut in the 50's and 60's. The turnouts are Peco small, medium and large. Because of the little room I have for my layout, the small turnouts are the most popular ones. The layout height is no more than 2 ft, because the layout stands in our bedroom and a high layout would look too massive. Yes, the houses in the Netherlands are small compared to houses in the USA.
My layout is 3 levels including the staging lavel. The upper level is well under way with the main line and passing sidings and yard in and running. Average train length 7' 2 engines 15 or so cars and a buggy. Track Atlas Code 55 DCC Digitrax Super Chief Main line, top level 150', 450' to 500' when all levels done. Era 1960's thru 1970's Maine, MEC and BAR Engines 75 Cars, presently 350 or so 700 needed Layout when finished should support 5 or 6 operators and a dispatcher. Min radius 16.25 Min turnout #5 yard. #7 mainline. Heights. Staging yard 29" Main level 44" Top level 60" http://www.n-scaler.com/gallery/index.php?cat=10005 [ April 09, 2006, 08:49 AM: Message edited by: MEC_FAN ]
This topic has been discussed before on TB. I'll leave it in place for newcomers to the TB forum. The link to a previous similar topic is in above post. Thanks.. Stay cool and run steam......
Generally, I try to keep train length just a little longer than my longest straightaway so the viewer is unable to see both ends of the train, giving it a more prototypical appearance. Cam
MEC FAN, Pretty soon your going to have some misrouted EL,NJT & MNRR running on the MONSTER . I may even bring other NJ N Scalers to
My layout is modern era, double decker around the walls in a 15-12ft room, and I generally use 3 locos to pull my trains of 50+ cars.
Mike the EL is already here. Power shortage on the BAR in spud season required they lease some extra power.
Mike I just dug these out, haven't run them in almost five years. A couple of the first loco's I ever bought, even have decoders in them and they do run good. I got some undec shells and they will get painted in MEC. My son was into EL, Conrail back then so I'll keep the shells in case he ever gets back into it. He's 20 and doing what 20 year olds do!! His Conrail GP-40's got new 38 shells done up in BAR blue.
I have four reverse loops on the JJJ&E. The shortest reverse loop holds twenty eight 40-50' cars plus an FT/F-3/F-7 ABBA unit. That train is my longest train . Stay cool and run steam....
Avg. length 3 cars Mainline 190" yes inches Sq Ft 19.375 15" x 186" shelf Era 1944 Locale City ( none in particular yet) Loco's 1- 0-6-0 cars 22 Operators Me Curve radius 30" turnouts #6 height 51" I determined that no train should exceed 10% of the mainline length of 190 " so longest train I can run would be 19"
My last layout had sidings designed to fit a maximum train length calculated by three SD40-2, 20 40' box cars, and a caboose. As it is now gone, I cannot fill in a lot of other specific data. It was all double deck. With a helix. Around the walls. And a peninsula. Hidden staging under the lower deck. Maximum grade was 2% on one sweeping curve. There was one curve of 18" radius. All the rest were 22" and larger. Made to handle two other people operating with me. Kinda miss it. But we sold that house. Boxcab E50
