Wow, that line-up of cars in the background-Chrysler, Willy's, Ford, maybe? and a 55' chevy! Not to mention that beautiful Dodge being filled up by the "greaser"! Wow!
Dad had a red with white top '61 Impala, said he cruised up to Northern Michigan with my Mom when they first started dating and some friends-in the middle of winter with the top down! Said it was a sunny but 28* degree day and the couple in the back seat about froze to death!
Pink 1957 Lincoln. Don't let autoapostrophe fool you, John North Willys didn't use them when he wrote his own name. That stuff scares me; you never know in what completely inappropriate place it'll stuff an apostrophe next (good thing they're small ). '48 Chevy, next to the '55.
I have the same problem with my family's name. People keep adding accented e's (é) where there aren't any... Oddly enough, auto-correct doesn't. Go figure...
My big issue with such is that most computers and some peoples can't separate the two parts of my last name. And some relatives have up to four parts. And when to capitalize. And I'm not talking of how some (especially women) use both last names combined. If what I hear is true, my former spouse would have seven of them.
People were alot tougher back then, not so many "creature comforts" like we have today! My 2022 Silverado can pretty much drive itself, with me along for the ride!
Yeah, in 30+ years of driving from DFW to SLC for family gatherings, the creature comforts of automobiles (and my budget for acquiring them) have increased substantially. I've always enjoyed the drive (the scenery is gorgeous!), but now I'm a lot less tired when I get there/back.
I like the slick glass tiles added to the front of the old, whitewashed brick building to modern it up. And the wooden penthouse on the Hotel Carolina.
Sylva is somewhat remote. Here's that same spot today. I do believe the structure of the Gulf station is vaguely visible at Ilda's. @acptulsa 's Hotel Carolina penthouse is no more, but the building is still there.
At a time when even gas stations had some kind of class. That truck next to the pumps is great. How can one not love a face like that one?
The Wine Bar & Cellar - you can see where the windows used to be. And I think if you look closely, at the upper right you can vaguely see a lighter spot where the circular Gulf sign used to be painted. The scene looked more robust back in the day. Now it looks (like so many rural towns) to be on life support.
Keep you car burning clean with that good Essolene! (just made it up ) Nice pumps with the clock face display. The attendant isn't too bad either...
New Jersey and Oregon have attendants to fill your gas but I don't know if many have garages attached. Don't know if they will wash your windshield or check tire pressure or oil any more. Oregon just passed a law allowing self serve gas pumps at stations. They still have to offer attendant pumps during "regular" business hours in most cities. New Jersey still does not allow self serve pumps.
