Guys, I'm in a rut! I have two SD45 shells, one standard nose SD40-2 shell, two C44's and one Atlas SD60 (waiting for paint scheme dicision to buy appropriate shell) that I can't think of what paint scheme I would like on them. For the SD45's, I am thinking of making one into an SD40M, but can't think of what to do the other in. I am thinking of painting the SD40-2 in the FURX scheme, but there are so many others... The SD60M I am totally stuck on, I may do an H II unit with the HTCR trucks, or an SP unit..... I already have one SP, CNW and one SF -9, so what should I do this one in? If you guys could give me some suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
Craig paint em however you want! I wish i had enough models that i had to ask for painting suggestions...
Do a UP C44-9W and with the SD45s do some ex-SP SD40M-2s in UP paint. A CNW SD40-2 with the ball and bar logo on the nose is very cool and is an easy paint job to do. I have done a CNW SD40-2 with this sceme and it is one of my favorite locos. For the SD60M I wouldn't do it in UP or BNSF since Atlas will be releasing more of them in April. I wouldn't make an SD70M out of it because their is a great posibility that Atlas will come out with them in the next 2 years. Have you ever used Accuflex thinner to remove lettering on Kato locos? I have tried this and it works great and doesn't harm the paint very much if you don't rub too hard. I do this when I want to update the UP lettering on Kato locos to the current sceme. It is alot easier than painting the whole shell and then decaling. I'm currently working on a Kato SD40-2 #3242.
Craig Why not any eastern roads? If its modern you want, you can have CR, NS, and CSX. You can also do my favorite, Southern, or do simple schemes like the Penn Centrals or Norfolk and Western (just a coat of black paint and 4 small decals!). Good luck Mike Antkowiak
Here are some suggestions for you Craig: 1. KCS SD40-2M aka SD45 2. Wisconsin Central SD45 3. FURX SD40-2 4. SD60MAC Use the HTCR trucks and paint it like the special green and white BN AC demonstrators. 5. CW44-9 How about the KCS NAFTA unit or TFM Just some thoughts. Just have fun painting them. That is what's important!
Thanks for the suggestions guys! Richard, I am already doing a KCS C44 . Good thought though. I might do the C44 in NS, and I might then get an SD80 and repaint it to NS when they come out. Or I could reletter a Conrail one to the NS. hhhmmm. I think one of my SD45's for sure will be an SP SD40M, and I am really considering making my SD60 into a UP SD70M (I think I may even have another mechanism waiting but I'll have to look). hhhhhmmmmmm I am still up in the air on the SD40-2 and other SD45. Wisconsin Central could definately be an idea.....
Here is what my SD40M-2 will look like. I am going to paint it a light gray primer color then I will paint the SP gray. After all is dried I will come back with a wire brush and remove the dark gray paint, revealing the lighter gray......will post pictures as I finish (it will be a while).
quote:
Originally posted by Craig Martyn: Because I live in the west!

I live in Australia and model mid-West US. SD45's - WC and bandit Soo (ex-BN) SD40-2 - Soo 66xx or HLCX C44's - hmmm... Golden Rat perhaps? SD60 - Soo - what else? Gary. Call me biased

quote:
Originally posted by Craig Martyn: Because I live in the west!

Thats a horrible excuse Craig, and I wont buy it. Alot of guys out here in NJ model SF and UP! Do another NS, like that SD60(?, it was with the cab window) I saw you post some time ago, it was beautiful. Mike
I wouldn't do a SP SD40M-2. Buy the Kato one and detail it. They made both #8663 and #8665. The frequently show up on Ebay.

Why would you spend time to custom paint a road you don't model when you could custom paint a road you do model. All of my foreign road units are factory paint Kato or Atlas.

I don't know how frequently they show up out there but around here you can't go out to get your mail without running into one.
OK guys, I think I am out of my rut! Thanks for all the input everyone! I have come up with this.... SD45: SP SD40M-2 (Straight out looks good!) SD45 #2: Wisconsin Central (nice scheme, a lot of different details to add) SD40-2: FURX (leasers are great, you can run them with any RR locomotive) SD60M: UP SD70M SD60M #2: SP SD70M (both of these units will have the correct, HTCR truck sideframes) C44-9W: NS (To go with my NS SD45 and maybe a NS SD80 later on) I am already doing a SOO SD60 Gary. "Golden Rat" LOL! That's a cool scheme to say the least! Thanks again everyone! (PS. Scott, I may end up getting a CNW SD40-2 for kicks, and adding the appripriate details )
-Scott Craig has already done some NS units, I was just asking him why not anymore of NS or similar roadnames. Mike
It's OK Brent, I am going to do two SD70M's. One UP and one SP. I forgot to mention that I have two extra SD60 bodys lying around, so I am going to make my UP SD70M one of the few that has the flared radiator intake. Like in this picture.
Craig, Do the Dash-9 in WP. Yes....WP! The SD45s should be lease units, like LMX. Oh....wait....these are for YOU?
