I've gotta wonder what the questions were, leading up to this answer. Bet they're interesting! Boxcab E50
Sometimes I feel like the B&M ( Busted and Mangled) other times the NYNH&H ( Now You're Never Home And Happy), sometimes I feel like the HT&W (Hoot, Toot & Whistle aka Hoosac Tunnel & Wilmington), realistically I'm probably like the O&W (Old & Weary aka Ontario and Western)
======================== I thought it was the N Y O & W(New York,Ontario & Western) aka "Old Woman" but enehay... Hows about C.M.St.P. & P. or Crushed,Mauled, Stampeded.Pushed & Pulled ?
I took it, and I'm the Empire Builder. I liked that, and I took it again, changing one answer, and I ended up the California Zephyr! Right on both accounts!
The Frisco would be nice.......mention, say, the Firefly, Will Rogers, Meteor, or the Southland- all fine passenger trains in their day.
I'd take it again. But am afraid of the new results. I could end up being the AS&RTT! (Abandoned, Scrapped & Rails To Trails....) Boxcab E50
I'm an Empire Builder. I guess I was merged, after all. Does this mean Lines West ares still open? Can one derail on a bicycle? "Seems to me they're neglecting the Midwestern RRs and their trains! " What else is new? Unless it comes from California or Lionel most magazines, publications and model manfacturers don't have a clue. I let my Trains subsrciption lapse for this reason. It was bad enough that the regular monthly publication couldn't get out of ASTF/UP/SP land (just can't get enough of the "Whatever it is" loop) but then they had a Steam Spectacular issue that I was looking forward to; and paying extra for . It started off with a nice article on the ASTF, then covered the UP's Super 800's, and then something on a Pennsylvania steamer...you get the picture. The only coverage of any road not from Cali or Penna was a single shot and small caption about the engine/road. No multipage spreads like those for the previous articles. The lone exception was a nice centerfold (you know you are getting old when the centerfolds in Trains are far more interesting that the ones in Playboy) of Milwaukee Road F7 hauling the Af-Hi on a sunny day. They were nice enough to devote a full paragraph to the Milwaukee Road Hudsons(their term)..er..Hudsons?? Hudsons?!!!!! This is the MILW...we ain't got no steenkin' Hudsons!!!!!!! That was the final straw with that filthy rag. If the editor of the premier railroading magazine can't get his engine nomenclature correct, I don't hold out much hope for the accuracy of the rest of the magazine. Mark--Cheap, Mean and Slow To Pay Kudos to you if you know what a 4-6-4 in MILW terms is. PS-There's a reason for the "Hudsons" rant....I work in publishing and editorial screw-ups are a pet peeve...as is watching almost every midwestern rail system maintain a non-exisitent status in todays magazine world. (Soapbox vacated)
They called 'em Baltics. Boxcab E50 </font>[/QUOTE]Oh I remember now. http://www.trainboard.com/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/87/t/000105.html#000000
I'm the Super Chief. Guess that's OK, but I'm more of a NorthWestern US/ Canada type guy than the Southwest.
1. I have that issue! I like it! (Maybe it's that I've never seen but one steamer under its own power [T&NO 786]) 2. Wonder why Kalmbach is absent on Midwest RRs when its in Minnesota? (I believe)
Actually, Kalmbach is located in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Waukesha, I believe). Their old address in the Beer City was 1027 N. 7th Street- they had a long fetish over the number over the years. Don't feel bad- except for "SY 3-8-80" in a 1981 issue of Trains, Frisco hasn't had much mention IMO. BTW, that stands for Springfield (MO) Yard, March 8, 1980, and covered 24 hours at the hub of Frisco operations. I still read Trains myself, but I understand frustrations- other pubs seem to have a regional bias (for instance, Railfan seemed never to get out of the Northeast, or feature pics by anyone except Jim Boyd, its first few years).
I don't feel bad about Trains. As has been pointed out, with them being based in Milwhackee, it's strange that they pretty much ignore Midwestern RR. Then again, since most Midwestern RR's have gone bankrupt, or been bought up by other roads, I guess there isn't much to cover anymore. Aw bunk! You can generally find what you are willing to look for! The, "same photographer" is not just in RR pubs. With media consolidation and the sharing of copyrights, it's much easier for MegaMedia corp to fire most photogs, writers, etc. and have a core of workers doing the same job in several publications. This may be good for the bottom line initially, but over time, the content suffers. I have dropped three subscriptions over the years because I just got so tired of seeing the same thing, month after month. On a side note.....If you are ever in the railroad/mining town of Caspian, MI, you can drive down Berkshire and Baltic Roads, near the Old MILW depot, which is still in great shape, sans tracks.
