ATSF What type of boxcar is this one?

    Taken in 1982, an ATSF boxcar...might have at this point been used by their MOW dept...I was curious what type of car it is...when it was manufactured etc...

    Looks like an express reefer to me. Notice the trucks. Normally used in passanger trains.

    Definitely an insulated car. Box or reefer. Trucks supplied for higher speeds as Jim has noted.

    I caught a similar car near Ottawa, KS on July 8, 1996. Minus the high speed trucks, high hand brake, roof ladders. Used as a buffer car (tool car?) for a ribbon rail train. However, the more I compare the two I don't think they are exactly the same.

    It looks like there are ice hatches from the photo... I vote 50' express reefer too. [​IMG]

    Don, 2nd pic is a mechanical reefer not an ice reefer, see the sliding panel at the far end where the mechanical bits are.

    Nice to see the classic paint schemes still around though. [​IMG]
