It was going to be a small mountain line, but since I ditched the plans of an upper level I have some flat areas I need to do something with (on either side of the smaller hills). The outer flat area is a 2% decline (R to L) and the inner flat is a 2% decline (L to R). now on the outer part, I was going to make it a two lane dirt road, but now I'm not so sure I like that idea. Seemed kinda "vanilla" Thought #1 - flow the hills down to the track (like I did near the top) and just scenic it Thought #2 - same as #1 but adding maybe a few flatter spots so I could add some "rustic" housing, junked car lot, etc... with a small 1 lane winding dirt road But I'm really open for any ideas - oh, and there will be trees going in at a later point in case that matters [ 07. Top shot coming later tonight - (there may be a shot you can use in my Webshots gallery (I can't see it from work) I will think about the golf course idea... maybe a 3-hole executive course? May be too steep, overall, either way. [ 07. February 2005, 15:46: Message edited by: nscale_lover ]
You could do a hillside with some housing on it. Even more dramatic would be something like this: You've got the flat land going all around the area, which matches the landform in the pic.
HMMMMM possibly I guess I could just dremel the hills down and build it back up with... something it does kinda match the landform I have [ 07. February 2005, 16:20: Message edited by: nscale_lover ]
Grey, I was actually thinking along those lines too, but the road doesn't go anywhere - in either direction. So I was looking for alternatives. Maybe an industrial trucking/construction vehicles - like Cat's - that might work.
could put a winding dirt road and a tv or radio antenna on a mesa. or several towers for that matter. blairline has one if you are modeling around the 70s. (at least i think blair's is for the 70s), could check their website to verify.
Hey Mike from what I see you could use a road starting from the top of that Pic and run down the road and cut a valley in your mountain on lower part of the hill (bottom of pic) and turn right and go around your hill then cross over at the switch
Thought #1 - flow the hills down to the track (like I did near the top) and just scenic it I think you've got the right idea here. I like the golf course suggestion too, maybe minature golf. (wait, I guess N scale golf IS minature golf ) On small layouts sometimes less is more. That way things don't look all packed in together.
You can't beat the Arizona desert for cool rock forms and colors. I lived in Phoenix for about 5 years and spent a few weekends traveling around the state, just sightseeing. I always hated having to drive back into the valley.
After eyeballing it up last night, the only problem I can forsee is a height limitation -- I'm military and on the move every few years. In my last move, a crate was built to transport the beast - yes, it even went on the moving truck with all the other stuff. Anyways, the crate's inside height is somewhere between 2-3 inches above the mountain's top (which I believe was about 16" from the absolute base of the layout - not above "ground level"). So anything I build must not be taller than the other (existing) mountain. And it should be solid enough to withstand a move (even though I plan on U-hauling it to my next base) [ 08. since you're in the military, how 'bout some type of gun range or something? I'm also thinking about putting a radio station on the layout in in woods and that would give you a reason for a tower and a building down a dirt road. Someone (can't remember who) makes a cool tower with a blinking red light. Maybe even an electrical substation. You could run the lines to a few towers that go up the hill and down the other side and "disappear in the distance". Maybe instead of the elecrical substation, some of those big windmills you see out west.
An old abondoned coal mine maybe. Tank range would be neat. An old abondoned airport/heliport - nice and dusty
I love the windmill idea - like those in the Palm Springs and Tehachapi area.... I think gently flowing out the hills and adding 6-10 windmills would be awesome. Ok, now who makes the new windmills got to go find my Walthers "Refrence book" [ 11. February 2005, 02:27: Message edited by: nscale_lover ]
Here's my 2nd thought...which I'm leaning toward... turning this area into this area but with a minimum height of 5" -- I'm not sure they'll look right [ 12. February 2005, 04:33: Message edited by: nscale_lover ]
